Ch.14

“It’s entirely my fault,” Tatsuya mumbled.
“I don’t get it though,” Jin muttered, “Why would he run away again?”
“I should have gone with him,” Tatsuya said, “How can I be so stupid?”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, Hime,” Ryo sat next to Tatsuya.
Tatsuya sighed and looked at Ryo, “But-”
“He will return,” Ryo tried to comfort Tatsuya, “Maybe he just needed to get some air away from us like last time.”

Jin sighed. He sat across from Ryo and Tatsuya after walked around their living room, thinking. Then, he looked at his friends.

“He wouldn’t have left willingly,” Jin spoke up, “There must have been a reason why he left.”
“I talked to the workers there,” Tatsuya said, “There weren’t many people in the cemetery that day. They didn’t see anyone suspicious.”
“What do you mean by willingly anyways?” Ryo frowned.
“Why did we have to take him away from his father’s house?” Jin asked.
“His father would never go there, Jin,” Tatsuya replied.
“Why aren’t you answering my question then?” Jin asked, frowning at Tatsuya.
“Because it’s none of your business,” Tatsuya glared at Jin.
Jin sighed, “What if Kazuya ran into his father, huh? What if his father wasn’t very happy about him leaving all the sudden?!”

It became quiet. Tatsuya looked down and Ryo glanced at Jin, who stood up. They all waited for someone to speak up. After a few minutes and still no reply from Tatsuya, Jin got fed up.

“I’m going to look for him again,” Jin mumbled, turning and grabbing his jacket.
“Jin,” Ryo called out.
Jin turned around, waiting for Ryo to continue.
“Don’t go looking in dangerous places,” Ryo said.

Jin rolled his eyes and left the apartment. He heard quick footsteps behind him.

“Jin!”

They were seriously getting on his nerves now. Jin turned and saw that Ryo had followed him out.

“What?!” Jin hissed.
“Don’t go to his house,” Ryo warned him, “You’ve seen his father before, right? You don’t want to mess with him.”
“What does that suppose to mean?” Jin frowned.
“He’s a dangerous man,” Ryo nervously glanced aside to see if Tatsuya had followed them out.
“He’s an old man,” Jin replied, “What the hell can he do to me?”
Ryo bit his lips, “If you’re right about Kazuya being there, then it’s not what he will do to you… it’s what Kazuya will get for you being there….”
Jin’s eyes widened.
“Don’t go there!” Ryo hissed, “You can’t go there alone at least.”
“Come with me then!” Jin quickly replied.
“I can’t,” Ryo shook his head, “If I go, Tatsuya will know that I told you.”
“So?” Jin frowned.
“If I go with you, everything will fall apart,” Ryo hissed, “He’ll find Tatsuya, too. I can’t let that happen!”
“Fine!” Jin angrily replied. He turned and started to walk away.
“Don’t go there Jin!” Ryo exclaimed, “Jin!”

Jin ignored him and continued to walk.

It’s been a few days since Kazuya returned. He was scared. His father has acted as if Kazuya hasn’t been gone at all, but Kazuya knew better than that. He knew that his father will snap soon. He didn’t when or how, but he could feel it coming.

He was cleaning the living room when his father returned from work. Kazuya gulped and looked at his father.
“W-we-welcome back, fa-father,” Kazuya nervously said.

His father looked up. The smirk on his father’s face scared Kazuya. His father walked closer to him.

“Right… you’re back,” his father mumbled.

Kazuya nodded. He could smell the alcohol on his father’s breath. Kazuya started to back away from his father. Alcohol and his father never mixed well… His father’s smirk quickly turned into a frowned.

“Where are you going?” his father hissed.
“I…” Kazuya swallowed hard.
“You think you can run away from me?!” his father yelled.

Kazuya flinched as his father’s fist made connect with his stomach. Kazuya dropped to the floor. His father started to kick him in various places. Everything that his father did to him began to open up. Slowly, Kazuya started to feel numb. Tears filled his eyes as his father kicked him in the stomach. His father was letting out all of his frustration on him. He heard his father mumbling something that he couldn’t quite catch. His vision started to go blurry and soon everything turned black.

A few hours later, Kazuya woke up in the same place he passed out. His father was sitting a few feet away, acting as if nothing has happened to Kazuya. Kazuya carefully sat up. He looked at himself. His shirt was already stained with dry blood. He quietly sighed. At least he wasn’t still bleeding…

“You’re finally up,” his father spoke up.
Kazuya swallowed hard and nervously nodded.
“Go get food with dinner,” his father ordered, “There’s nothing to eat in here.”

His father pointed at the kitchen table where there was some money. Kazuya slowly stood up. He flinched, he could barely move with all the pain. When he finally reached the table, he saw that there was enough money to buy food for only one person. Kazuya resisted the urge to tell his father something about the money. He grabbed his jacket to cover his shirt and placed the money in his pocket. Without another word to his father, he left the house.

While he was walking towards the supermarket, it began to rain. Kazuya tried to keep his jacket around him tight. It was getting colder. He could feel the cold wind hitting his wounds. His body starting to ache with every step he took. Then he froze. He couldn’t take the pain anymore. He felt so broken….

“I’ve already called them, Jin,” Tatsuya tried to explain, “They told me that they saw no one visiting her grave since that day.”
“Just lead the way, Ueda,” Jin rolled his eyes.

Tatsuya sighed and led Jin to his aunt’s grave. As they got closer to the grave, Jin and Tatsuya noticed someone sitting near the grave. The person seemed to be asleep. Tatsuya stopped Jin from walking any closer.

“What?” Jin hissed.
“I…I think it’s Kazuya,” Tatsuya looked at the sleeping person.

They walked a little closer and saw that it was really Kazuya sleeping in front of the grave. Tatsuya sighed in relief. He bent down and stared at Kazuya. With no regard that Kazuya was sleeping, Tatsuya pulled Kazuya into a hug, waking Kazuya up. Jin watched as Kazuya winced in pain. Tatsuya carefully pulled Kazuya away.

“Are you all right?” Tatsuya asked.
Kazuya nodded, “I-I’m f-fine.”
“Are you sure?” Tatsuya asked.
“I d-d-did it, Tat-chan,” Kazuya mumbled.
Tatsuya frowned, “Did what?”
“I….I left f-father,” Kazuya quietly answered, “I ran away from him….”
“It’s so great, Kazuya,” Tatsuya broke into a smile.
Kazuya weakly smiled, “Isn’t it?”
Tatsuya hugged Kazuya again, “It is, Kazu! It is!”
Kazuya winced, “It hurts….”
“What?” Tatsuya swallowed hard, breaking the hug.
“Ever…everything hurts, Tat-chan,” Kazuya mumbled.

Tatsuya opened Kazuya’s jacket and saw his shirt with all the red stain. Tatsuya looked at him nervously.

“We have to get you to a hospital fast,” Tatsuya quickly said, turning to Jin, “Help me stand him up.”

Jin nodded and bent down. He carefully placed Kazuya’s right arm around his shoulder. Tatsuya did the same with Kazuya’s left arm. They slowly helped Kazuya stand up. Kazuya flinched, feeling his body move.

“Where the hell is my dinner, Kazuya?!”

They saw Kazuya’s father standing in front of them, blocking their way out. Kazuya froze when his eyes landed on what his father was holding in his right hand. It was the same chef’s knife that killed his mother….

“I thought you had a role in this, Tatsuya…” he growled.
“Shocked?” Tatsuya glared at his uncle.
“Give my son back and no one will get hurt,” Kazuya’s father warned them.
“Go, Tatsuya,” Jin quietly said.
“What?!” Tatsuya hissed, “There is no way-”
“What are you two mumbling about?!” Kazuya’s father yelled.
“Go and call the police,” Jin hissed.
“I’m not leaving you alone,” Tatsuya continued to argue.
“Kazuya, come here right now!” his father exclaimed, pointing the knife at Kazuya.
Kazuya swallowed hard.

Jin pulled Kazuya behind him, covering him, while Tatsuya took a step closer to his uncle.

“Leave or I will call the police,” Tatsuya warned him.
“I’m not leaving until you two return my son!” he yelled.
“It’s not your son!” Jin exclaimed, “People don’t treat their kids the way you do! They don’t beat their kids half to death! Parents are supposed to care and love for their kids!”
“You shut up!” Kazuya’s father shouted, “You know nothing about parenting!”

Tatsuya turned to Jin, waiting for Jin to tell him what to do. Jin looked at Tatsuya and then glanced back at Kazuya, who started to shake in fear.

“Take Kazuya away,” Jin told Tatsuya, “Take him to the hospital.”
“Don’t you dare touch him!” Kazuya’s father exclaimed.

Tatsuya walked to Jin and then tried to pull Kazuya away from Jin. Kazuya shook his head.

“No, you’ll get hurt,” Kazuya muttered.
“Go with Ueda,” Jin quietly told Kazuya, “I’ll be ok.”
“No,” Kazuya got a tight grip on Jin’s shirt.
“Don’t worry about me,” Jin whispered.
“Come here right now, Kazuya!” his father yelled.
“Go with Ueda, Kazuya,” Jin mumbled.

Kazuya slowly let Jin’s shirt go, but instead of allowing Tatsuya to help him, he walked towards his father. He was still closer to Jin and Tatsuya when he stopped.

“Go away,” Kazuya softly said, “Just….just leave me alone!”

Kazuya could see the anger in his father’s eyes. Jin’s eyes widened when he saw that Kazuya’s father walking towards Kazuya when the knife in front. He quickly pulled Kazuya behind him when Kazuya’s father reached them.
Jin flinched when he felt the knife cutting into his lower stomach. Kazuya’s father, who was in shock at what he did, quickly ran away from the cemetery. Kazuya froze in place as knife fell out. Jin kneeled down trying to stop the bleeding. Tatsuya quickly pulled his cell phone out his pocket to call an ambulance. Kazuya fell next to Jin, staring at Jin in shock.

“W-w-wh-why….?”
Jin looked at Kazuya and weakly smiled, “I….I promised, d-d-didn’t I? I’ll al…always protect you…”
