Ch.13

“You probably don’t want to see Yamapi right now,” Kazuya heard Ryo said.
“Yeah, he would kill me,” Jin’s voice appeared, “and I don’t really feel like dying today.”
Ryo laughed.

Kazuya swallowed hard. He knew he shouldn’t be listening. He took in a breath and walked into the living room. Ryo and Jin noticed him almost immediately.

“Finally decided to get up?” Jin smiled.
“Tatsuya had to leave for work early, if you’re wondering where he is,” Ryo said.
Kazuya nodded, “Oh.”
“Did you sleep well?” Jin asked, “We have to leave soon.”
“…I slept fine…” Kazuya mumbled.
“Where are you two exactly going?” Ryo frowned.
“Oh, I invited Kazuya to lunch with my family,” Jin replied.
“Huh?!” Ryo stared at Jin in shock.
Jin rolled his eyes, “What’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing,” Ryo replied, still a little shocked, “…It’s just surprising.”

All the sudden, the front door opened and Yamapi walked inside. Jin’s eyes widened and he quickly stood up.

“Err….” Jin bit his lips.
“You,” Yamapi growled.
Jin nervously smiled, “Oops?”
“Oops my ass! Where the hell were you last night?!” Yamapi yelled.
“I forgot?” Jin lied.
“Yeah right! Tell the truth!” Yamapi exclaimed, “I waited for you there for three hours!”
“That’s not my fault that you waited that long!” Jin replied.
“You could have called!” Yamapi glared at Jin, “Or did you forget how to use the phone?!”
“I’m really sorry, Pi!” Jin exclaimed.
“…Well you better make it up to me,” Yamapi said.
“I will,” Jin rolled his eyes.

Meanwhile, Kazuya sat next to Ryo, who was laughing at his friends. Ryo leaned closer to Kazuya.

“That’s why you should never make Yamapi angry,” Ryo mumbled quietly enough for only Kazuya to hear, “He’ll make you pay.”
Kazuya nodded.
“We should leave in about ten minutes,” Jin turned back to Kazuya and Ryo.
Kazuya bit his lips, “Are you sure it’s ok for me to come?”
“Of course!” Jin smiled, “My parent will love you.”
“They probably will,” Yamapi agreed, “They like-”
“You have to come, I already told them you will,” Jin quickly interrupted.
“Err…..” Kazuya hesitated.
“Please?” Jin asked.
“…Ok,” Kazuya mumbled.
Jin smiled, “Don’t worry, they won’t bite.”

“They’re fighting….again….” Kazuya sighed.
“What is it this time?” Tatsuya asked.
“Money, as usual,” Kazuya sadly replied.

Kazuya thought that things would get when Tatsuya came to live with them. My mother even told him so, but it was a lie. Things between his parents only got worse. It’s only been a month since Tatsuya moved in. Kazuya thought that they could all be one happy family, but that dream already was in ruins…

“I told you that we don’t need that!” his father exclaimed.
“You’re barely in the house! How in the world do you know what this house needs?!” his mother fired back, “I needed that money to repair the oven!”
“It wasn’t broken in the first place!” his father yelled, slamming his fists on the table.
“Like you’re any better!” his mother screamed, Kazuya could see the tears in her eyes, “You’re always out of the house! It’s always going to your fancy parties and business trips! Buying drinks, wasting all our money!”
“That’s all for work and you know that very well!” his father exclaimed.
“I’m here trying to raise OUR family,” his mother said loudly, “You never take some time to be with your own son!”
“Shut up! I know my son very well!” his father yelled.

Kazuya sighed again, turning to his cousin. Tatsuya grabbed Kazuya’s hand and pulled him off the floor.

“We shouldn’t listen,” Tatsuya told Kazuya quietly.
“Do all parents fight like that?” Kazuya asked.
Tatsuya shrugged, “Not every relationship is perfect, Kazuya.”
“They’re always yelling at each other, though,” Kazuya pouted.
“They got problems,” Tatsuya said.
“I wish they can be happy,” Kazuya muttered.
“Come on,” Tatsuya weakly smiled, “Let’s go outside, ok?”

Kazuya slowly nodded, trying to forget about his parents’ fight.

“Oh, Jin, you’re finally here!” Jin’s mom greeted them at the door, “And you must be Kazuya.”

Jin’s mom smiled at Kazuya, who gave her a small smiled back. They walked inside the house and she led them to the living room.

“Please sit and make yourself comfortable,” she told them, “Do you want something to drink?”
Kazuya shook his head and sat down.
“It’s fine, mom,” Jin said, sitting down next to Kazuya.

Jin’s mom nodded and sat across from them. Jin glanced at his mom and then pulled the jewelry box with the necklace from his jacket.

“Happy Birthday, mom,” Jin smiled, giving the box to his mom.
“Oh Jin, you shouldn’t have,” his mom replied, opening the box. She gasped when she saw the necklace, “It’s beautiful, Jin!”
“I knew you’re like it,” Jin smiled.
“Like it? I love it!” she replied, “How much did it cost?”
“That doesn’t matter,” Jin said.
“Tell m-”
“You know, Kazuya helped me pick it out,” Jin quickly changed the subject.
Jin’s moms smiled at Kazuya, “Well, thank you, too.”
Kazuya blushed, embarrassed, “Ah, well, I didn’t really…..”
Jin chuckled, “You’re welcome, mom.”

“Are you still working at that restaurant?” Jin’s dad, who joined them awhile later, asked Jin.
“No, they closed down,” Jin answered.
“So what are you doing then?” he asked.
“Eating,” Jin teased, taking another spoonful of pasta that his mom made.
“Jin! I’m serious!” his dad scolded.

Kazuya felt the mood tense up. He swallowed hard, waiting to see how Jin would reply.

“I’m looking for another job,” Jin rolled his eyes, “You don’t have to worry about me.”
“Jin is a good boy, dear,” Jin’s mom said, “He wouldn’t disappoint us.”
“I know,” Jin’s dad replied, “If there is any problem, Jin, make sure to come to us, all right?”
Jin nodded, “I will.”

Kazuya quietly sighed. If he answered to his father like that, he knew it would equal trouble…

“So, do you work, Kazuya-san?” Jin’s dad asked him.
“No sir,” Kazuya nervously replied, “I…I used to work in a supermarket, but I was laid off….”
Jin’s dad nodded, “It’s hard times that we’re living in.”
“Do you have any brothers or sisters?” Jin’s mom asked.
“Just me,” Kazuya answered.
“What do your parents do?” Jin’s dad asked.
“My dad owns a bookstore,” Kazuya slowly replied.
“Your mom is a housewife?” Jin’s dad assumed.
“My mom….s-she died when I was younger,” Kazuya swallowed hard.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jin’s dad replied, remorseful.
“That’ terrible,” Jin’s mom said, “I hope we didn’t bring back any bad-”
Kazuya shook his head, “You didn’t know.”
“Well, let’s bring some dessert,” Jin changed the subject.
“Can you help me with that, Jin?” his mom asked.
Jin nodded, “Sure.”

After Jin and his mom left, Kazuya excuses himself to the bathroom. When he is there, he sighed to himself. He could feel his nerves tense up. He didn’t understand why all the sudden he became very thankful for Jin to change what they were talking about. He breathed in, relaxing a little. He was about to leave when he heard voices outside the bathroom. It was Jin and his mom talking.

“I think he is a very nice boy,” Jin’s mom said.
“He is,” Jin said.
“I see the way you were looking at him, too,” she added.
“Mom…” Jin groaned.
“Did I sense that you have a little crush on him?” she asked in a teasing tone.

Kazuya’s eyes widened. Is that why Jin was always helping him out? Did Jin like him?

“Mom! Stop teasing me!” Jin whined.

Kazuya heard Jin’s mom laughing in response.

When they returned to Tatsuya’s and Ryo’s apartment that evening, Kazuya was feelings confused about what he meant to Jin. Was Jin trying to get something out of Kazuya? Why did Jin care about him anyways? Kazuya’s heart was pounding as Jin told him how happy he was that Kazuya came.

“I-I-It was f-fun,” Kazuya nervously replied, “T-Th-thanks for inviting me…”
Jin smiled, “Well, I’ll see you tomorrow then.”
“Y-yeah,” Kazuya blushed.

Kazuya gulped. Why did he all the sudden become so nervous around Jin?

The next day, Tatsuya decided that it was time to go visit Kazuya’s mother. Although Kazuya had a bad feeling about going to his mother’s grave, he went with Tatsuya anyways.

They arrived at the cemetery an hour after leaving. Tatsuya parked his car and they got out.

“You remember where the grave is, right?” Tatsuya asked.
Kazuya nodded, “Yes.”
“Ok, I’ll meet you there. I want to buy some flowers at the shop,” Tatsuya said.
“Ok,” Kazuya mumbled, walking towards the cemetery itself.

It was about a ten minute walk from the parking lot to his mother’s grave. On the way, Kazuya grabbed a bucket of water to clean it as well. When he reached the grave, he placed the bucket down and looked at the grave. He only been to his mother’s grave once, it was a week after she died. His father took him and Tatsuya to see it. Kazuya sighed; it hasn’t changed much, from what he could remember.

Kazuya picked up the sponge that was in the bucket of water and kneeled on the ground. Then, he started washing it.

“You!”

Kazuya froze, recognizing the voice. The sponge dropped from his hands. He started to breath heavily. He slowly turned and saw his father standing a few feet away from him.
