no, that's not the beginning of a joke.

in Mountain View California a robot went into Red Rock Coffee and ordered a scone. apparently robots are very good tippers. this little scone-buying adventure was caught on camera by several bystanders. here is the video from one of them

the robot is made by a company called Anybots and they are remotely operated telepresence robots. the operator interacts with the world using cameras in the robot's "face" and the operator's face can be seen in the little screen just above the cameras (which you can see at the 3:42 mark in the video above).

while scone buying isn't necessarily the intended purpose of these robots, it is an interesting use of the technology and shows off the possible uses for shut-ins or people who can't get up to communicate with the outside world. it would also be a neat way to attend a meeting when you can't physically be there.

the company's website has a link where you can test drive the robots but there are no public robots available at the moment.
