MySpace is a total hole, but I did get in touch with some old friends from long ago that I'd wanted to hear from again. So that's useful. Lots of people use the thing in spite of the utterly craptacular code the thing spits out. And the aesthetics of the place in general are cringeworthy. It's sort of like time-traveling back to 1998 or so, when the blink tag was still around, but adding video and sound (which usually clash with each other.) And most friend requests you'll get will be porn spam. Because you clearly don't have enough of that in your life already, eh?

Facebook's handy if you've got a specific network you want to be in touch with (schools, mostly.) Much less useful otherwise. It has the bonus of being much less fugly than MySpace, so it doesn't damage your teeth so much to use (from the grinding, dontchaknow.)

None of the other ones (Friendster, Orkut, etc.) are very useful these days for folks in the US; they've largely been adopted by users from elsewhere, I think. Interfaces for them are fine, but again, not really worth it.

You and wyldkyss below mentioned the convenience of storing and managing separate networks within facebook. That, at the very least, seems cool.

I don't particularly want to join any of these, but there are some people who only use one or two (like me with livejournal). Even if myspace wasn't the asshole of the internet, I probably wouldn't take the time to check it unless it had a system in place to ping the hell out of me when someone adds me, which would mostly be porn, as you said.

Thank you for also mentioning Friendster and Orkut, because I'd forgotten about both. I won't be joining them but at now I know they exist. Some of my website clients have asked about marketing on social networks, so it's good for me to have a list of recommendations.
