Well, really depends on what you're after with social networks. Myspace has the population, so "whoring" yourself out for friends and such works out well in that case. Facebook has a decent interface, the add application aspect is nice. Basically you can code some sorta whatever to interface with your profile. Course, this definitely opens things up, who knows exactly what's going on behind the scenes of that.... There's a large number, but some weird ones include games(scrabble knockoff, oregon trail, some Zombie/Vampire/etc fight that doesn't do anything deal, etc), plus probably some other ones that I hadn't even touched on.
Both of those like the "main page" interface, where everything you do is one click away, all from the "home" page. They have started to post what you're friends are up to there as well, posted pictures, made a "blog" entry, whatever. Myspace definitely has the lion's share, but I think unless you've got specific people that only really know or choose to use myspace, blah. Facebook, I've been fairly ok with, but I can definitely see it spreading out, getting worse. Thus far it's been fairly limited, few ppl from the Oxford crew and such that I've added, so it's not to bad.
Basically, I'm on both of them. But at the same time, any of my major communication(blog entries, pictures, etc) all happen here. I don't trust them that much, I don't utilize them that much, etc.
As far as other social networks though, other than the LJ knockoff types, I donno, as I've not really used them.
I suggest if you're inclined to do it, setting up myspace/facebook, put in some basic info, profile bits, etc., and then basically letting it linger to nothing. As I said, myspace I use for communicating with my family mostly. My brother and both my sisters are on there, and now apparently my mom's on there as well(to monitor my sisters). If you don't really wanna be on there, then I say heck with it, don't let ppl push the matter. It's definitely not worth much trouble on that end.
