I find it amazing how quickly people eat up really shitty poems written by 14 year old suburban white kids about how depressing their life is "Mom, why wouldn't you take me to the candy store? My life is over, darkness, death, despair, etc." but as soon as I write a poem that doesn't sugarcoat (and I'm not talking about 'cussing', I'm talking about very blunt, direct metaphors and images) people have a problem with it. Somebody told me that a poem I wrote was "too distubring" but the poem was about sex and violence and how closely they are juxtaposed in the mainstream media--apparently a poem about corruption, sex, and violence should be easy reading, and all should come away very happy about the experience.
I'm getting tired of half-decent love/angst poems being so heavily praised because people "can relate" it's called dictating to your audience, the same thing pop music does.
AND-- Not understanding a poem is not always a fault against the poet, stop disliking things because you don't understand them.
Sorry for this rant- you may as always disreagrd; most people do.
