Luke collapsed on the couch and looked around the room. There were toys and books and clothing everywhere.
“Tell me again, why you volunteered us for this?”
Lorelai looked up from the other corner of the couch where she was holding a sleeping baby in her arms. Tucked into sleeping bags on the floor were two other small children, also fast asleep. “Because Sookie was desperate, and she’s our friend and we’re nice.”
“Next time we should try not being nice. Who knew such tiny beings could be so much work?”
Lorelai laughed softly. “I sense a rant coming on. I love ranting Luke.”
He ignored her and kept talking. “I mean, they’re so small and yet they made a bigger mess than you do when you’re running late for dinner at your parent’s house. Then there’s the food, their stomachs can’t be bigger than my fist and yet those two ate an impossible amount. How can they eat so much? And then, and then, it comes out the other end and they can’t be civilized and use a bathroom like the rest of us, so we have to change diapers. Diapers! Me changing diapers!”
“Are you done now?” Lorelai was grinning.
“No.” Luke opened his mouth to rant some more, then stopped and sighed. “Yes.”
She poked him in the side with her foot. “Admit it. Despite the mess and the food and the diapers, you enjoyed yourself today.”
Luke cracked a small smile. “Yeah, I did.” He went serious again. “Don’t tell anyone.”
Lorelai stifled a laugh. “It’s our little secret.”
“Good.” He started to massage her foot, idly.
“Luke?” Lorelai whispered after a moment.
“Yeah?”
“Do you think you’d want one, one day? A baby… with me?”
He smiled. “I think I would like that very much.”
