A reminder that this is the first of my annual awards this year, there should be one a day for the next two weeks. Hopefully you'll enjoy these picks and feel free to argue/debate in the comments of course. The first category is a new one this year, but a welcome addition: Quote of the Year. The Quote of the Year is a quote of some notable measure (as in something published, or on TV, etc), so no funny things your friends said.
This year's quote of the year was the only one that sprung to mind when I sat down to pick the quote of the year. Even after some research of a good mix of funny and serious quotes, only one quote came out on top. This quote became started a poltiical firestorm, most likely destroying this politican's chances for a 2008 presidential bid, and nearly tipping the large mid-term election leads his party had worked up. In all fairness, what he said wasn't what was scripted, but then again, better not to ad lib too much when the camera's pointed at you (ask George W about that).
This quote is one of the few major quotes this year that will probably be remembered, and the reaction (both by the public and by the speaker) thrust this into the spotlight for quite a whiel.
Without further ado, this gem from everyone's favorite junior Senator from Massachuessetts, John Kerry:
Wow's 2006 Quote Of The Year: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq." - Sen. John Kerry (D-MA)
Runner-Up:
Of course the runner up here comes from everyone's favorite Pope, who managed to offend an entire religion:
"Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Pope Benedict XVI.
Yikes.
