Reading, wasps and birthday surprises

Aug 25, 2010 21:44

I have not been reading a lot lately, partly because I've been having trouble concentrating, and partly because I've been watching too much TV, have Internet access at home again and have been super busy at work.

My birthday weekend was pretty laid back. My son treated me to a show. I was a cheap date, I only had water. We went to see "The Expendables" which was fun and bloody. Stopped at the grocery store on the way home and bought rib eyes and more for grilling out. The rib eyes were great, and we also grilled potatoes, chicken thighs, chicken drumsticks and Italian sausages. The chicken thighs were diced up for tonight's dinner - fried rice.

My sister sent me a popover pan, Get Fuzzy book and a Silpat for my birthday. The pan makes perfect popovers. The Silpat helps even out cooking temps while baking cookies and pastries. My mother and father sent me a cute ring that I coveted. It has two flowers made out of my mother's birthstone and mine - amethysts and peridots. Mom says there are more birthday surprises in the mail. Fun! I have the best family! Mom called at 8 a.m. on my birthday, waking me up. All was forgiven though, because in addition to birthday greetings from my parents, I got to talk to my Grandma and my Aunt Margy.

Our home has been invaded by wasps again, but I caught the landlord outside on my way to a school board meeting on Monday, and he promised to send over the exterminator. No one came by on Tuesday, and we killed five wasps in under 15 minutes while cooking dinner last night. The bug guy arrived early this morning, which is great, but Jace was stung on the pinkie toe this morning. He's OK.

We attended freshman orientation at Jace's high school tonight. One week from today, he'll be in school.

Books read:

"Clear and Present Danger" by Tom Clancy, a reread after we watched the Harrison Ford movie with the badly cast William Dafoe as John Clark.

"The Reluctant Widow" by Georgette Heyer, another good Heyer book, but it won't be my favorite.

"Charity Girl" by Georgette Heyer, which was not a great book. The hero and heroine didn't seem to interact much, although when they did, it was fun.

2010 books, wasps, jace, family, cooking, weekend activity
