Well summer has finally arrived in Edmonton (although we've had more than our share of rainy and cool days. Beh.) And I've been trying to have as much fun on the weekends as I can!! Here's what I've been up to:
Canada Day
Kathy and I hung out on Canada Day. We went downtown and walked around Churchill Square and the Legislature buildings for a bit, then had a nice dinner at Julio's. Then it was off to the fireworks! It was a really good display this year. Here's a pic of the two of us enjoying the sunshine:
Street Performer's Festival
Kyle and I headed over here one night after work. This is a week-long event held at Churchill Square downtown, and street performers, including magicians, jugglers, acrobats and people doing all kinds of crazy stuff, convene here and put on mini-shows for everyone. It was SO much fun! We watched an amusing guy from New Zealand do some crazy stunts on his unicycle, and a family of magicians do some pretty cool tricks. Unfortunately, it clouded over while we there and just downpoured. There was hail and everything, it was insane. Churchill Square doesn't have much shelter, so everyone was crammed under these little picnic areas. But it was still fun! And I didn't have my camera with me, which sucked, because I could have gotten some good pictures!
Capital Ex
This was so much fun, like last year. On the Saturday evening , I met up with Rob, Nathan and some of Nathan's friends from work. We had a bite to eat and then went to see this show called Cirque Mechanics Birdhouse Factory. It was like a mini Cirque-du-Soleil show and it was awesome. After the show, we met up with Kyle, who had headed over after work. We all went to see Brent Butt perform at the Edfest stage, and he was SO cool! He gave a very good show for us, we didn't even have to wait after the opening act, he just came right out on stage and he started the show. He was funny and he is excellent at interacting with the audience. He was trying on a few of the crazy hats that people were wearing and playing with someone's Spiderman hammer balloon, that they had obviously won at one of the midway booths. You could tell a lot of his routine was ad-libbed, and I would definitely go see him perform again. It was a great night.
Kyle and I headed back the next day, and went on a few of the tamer rides. We walked around some of the exhibits in the buildings and had a bite to eat. (MMM, carnival food. I had a corn dog!). Then, we went to the Spirit of the Butterfly exhibit, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. They have this dome set up indoors and the butterflies fly freely around it. I walked in and a butterfly landed right on me, it was unbelievable. Kyle kept attracting them as well. Many people were just covered in them, it was awesome. And they had a glass booth set up where you could see some butterflies being born. I am definitely going back next year. After that, I took Kyle to see the Cirque show because I had enjoyed it so much and he didn't get to see it the night before. Then, we briefly watched a hypnotist before we had to head home.
I haven't posted pictures on here in quite some time (because I tend to use Facebook now) but there were a lot of good pics from the Brent Butt show and the butterfly exhibit, so I thought I would create a new album on here to display them. So, here they are:

This was a food festival held at Churchill Square. Vendors from many restaurants around the town set up booths and provided samples of their finest food. It was delish!!! I had Green Onion Cakes from one booth, Bacon-wrapped scallops on a skewer, some sort of potatoes in a cream sauce, and a couple of excellent desserts (it's definitely not the place to go if you are trying to be healthy or lose weight! Heh heh). Kyle had a few goodies too, he had this super-spicy pasta that was a bit too hot for me! Again, forgot the camera, so no pictures. :-(
So there's been lots of festivals here in Edmonton this summer. This weekend is the Heritage Festival, and Kyle and I are heading there tomorrow.
What else have I been up to? I saw Mamma Mia last weekend with Kathy and loved it. I also saw the new X-Files movie with Kyle and loved that as well. A lot of the critics panned it, but I thought it was like a classic X-Files episode and that it stayed true to the series. Plus, I fell in love with the song at the end, Broken by Unkle and the scene after the credits was so cute! :-)
And last night, Rob invited Kyle and I over to his place. He said he had something to show me, something I would like very much. And indeed he did! His roommate's cat had kittens a little while ago and Mother Cat and her three little babies were all there! They were SOOO cute, I hadn't played with kittens in so long. I stole some pictures that Rob posted on Facebook of them:
KITTTIES!!!!! Aren't they the cutest things ever???
After that, Nathan stopped by and we all went out bowling and played some pool and foosball. It was a terrific night, I forgot how much fun "Rock and Bowl" nights used to be! :-)
So I think that's enough of an update for now. I have a video to post and I will hopefully have time for that on Monday, since it's a HOLIDAY! Whoo!!!
