I'm having this problemo with Caverly. Lately, he hasn't been using his box very much at all. He's always pooped on the floor, which is fine by me. I'd rather pick up terds off the floor than go digging through a litter box to get them! But lately he has been peeing everywhere. When he pees on the floor, most of the time he does it when i'm at work ( Read more... )

I'm so sorry to hear that this is happening -- I remember that he often didn't poop in the litterbox, but preferred to pee there if he had the opportunity. I also remember that he'd often pee rivers when he did get into his litter box, which makes me think that either:
a. he doesn't realize he has to pee because he doesn't have complete sensation, or
b. he thinks he can hold it in just a little bit longer and overestimates his bladder capabilities

I usually made a point of putting him in the litter box periodically so that he got used to peeing there again. Maybe put him in the litter box before you go to bed, so he goes to sleep with an empty bladder?

Keep me posted -- and I'll see you two on Monday.

I usually do put him in his box before i go to bed, but sometimes he just won't go. He'll get in and out, and i'll just keep putting him back til he pees. But sometimes he just won't go. The thing I don't understand, is that he seems to be walking out of his way to get to this one spot on the living room floor that he likes to pee on. Which is strange, since his litter box is usually close by...either the same distance or closer.
The other problem with putting him in the box before bed time, is that he usually climbs down halfway through the night and takes a drink of water, then climbs back in. Hm.

I'm going to try putting his box in the area he seems to be peeing on in the living room. Maybe he'll get used to using the box again. (i hope!) I'll let you know how it goes :)

we used to have this problem with my cat Ben. He used to pee all over our dining room table. We tried changing cat litters and cleaning more frequently and that seemed to work.

Could it also be a terriorial thing because of your other cat? And has he been fixed yet? Those are the only other two things I can think of... good luck!

sigh. Well my kitty is special..he has CH (cerebellar hypoplasia) which makes it really tough for him to get around. So sometimes he goes just because he can't make it to the litter box in time. but he was doing so well and lately he's just been a mess :(
i started changing the litter more often like you said, so hopefully that will help. I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE!

i've been told using spray bottles to spray water on a cat when they're bad or do something bad is supposed to work.

yesss maybe i will have it cleaned by then. i had it cleaned last time you were over but it lasted like 1 day.

and about cav. you even said even though he has that disorder he doesnt realize anything is wrong with him. so it'd just be like disciplining a normal cat, ya know? but i know what you mean. i feel bad yelling at my cat too sometime and she's perfectly normal.
