The Supreme Court (finally) gets it right

Jun 26, 2003 10:45

A few minutes ago, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a major ruling in favor of gay rights. Specifically, the Court ruled on a 6-3 vote that states cannot legally prohibit private sexual relations between consenting adults. Just as important, the court also overruled its terrible 1986 decision that upheld a Georgia sodomy law and that declared homosexuals have no constitutional right to engage in private gay sex.

This is a HUGE step forward for gay rights, especially coming from an ultra-conservative Court. The majority opinion was written by one of the conservative "swing" justices, Anthony Kennedy, who said the Texas law "demeans the lives of homosexual persons."

I never thought I'd say this, but THANK GOD for the great state of Texas, and their idiot homophobic legislature. They managed to write a law that was so illogical and blatantly unfair to gays that not even the current Supreme Court could allow it to stand.

This is a big decision, and it's long overdue in this country.
