In one way or another, we’ve all imagined a place that doesn’t exist. Sometimes it’s fantastical, and sometimes just on the other side of town. Why not bring these places to life, of a sort, by creating your own atlas?

You will need:

• a map of the area you plan to concentrate on
• various collected ephemera
• adhesives
• writing/drawing implements

Do:

• Attach the map to a sturdy substrate that can take the weight of the items you attach to it.

Things you can do with old or damaged maps.

• Use an old map as a base and paint or draw on it.
• Use the map as collage material.
• Use cut-outs from the map as either masks or stencils.
• Use the map to cover your journal, scrapbook, photo album, or travel diary.
• Turn the map into coasters by cutting it into pieces and gluing them onto tiles and sealing them.

• photos of your choosing
• a selection of pens, fineliners, paint pens/markers

Do:

• Choose a photograph of anything you like that perhaps has easily defined or definable outlines.
• Invent your locale.
