He doesn't really know where he's going. He could go to Chicago, he supposes--beg them to take him back, tell them he's older now, wiser, even though it hasn't been that long.
Tell them that he has something inside him waiting to burst, that someday, this will help him be a great artist.
But everything up until now feels like it happened to a different person. To Matt-in-Dillon. Something similar happened when he became QB1, but he has to laugh a little, thinking he can compare what that was to what he is.
The sign telling him he's entered Oklahoma is the best thing he's ever seen.

He sleeps in his car, in the back. It smells like pizza and faintly like smoke. It's not too cold yet, but he knows it will be.
It's unbelievable to him how little he regrets--not just about leaving, but about everything.
He thinks he's lived a good life, all things considered.
He thinks he still is.
*
He drives through Chicago, but he doesn't stop, not even for food. He just wants to be able to say he went.
*
In New York, he stops. It's stupid, he knows--it's expensive, it's huge, it's strange. But he can't help thinking if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
He needs to feel like he can do anything.

He runs into Street by accident, five weeks in. Just sees him on the corner of Broadway and Grand. Street laughs, says how weird it is they both ended up here.
"So how're you doing, man?" Street asks, all smiles.
Matt finds himself smiling back. "Never been better."
