"You know," says Nomiya absently. "It's my birthday tomorrow."
"What?" asks Yamada surprised. "You didn't say anything!"
"I'm saying something now," he says patiently. Then, "You should get me something nice."
"You can't just say that!" she protests.
"Why not?"
"It's rude to ask outright like that."
"So you aren't going to get me anything?"
She flushes. "If I have time, I'll see."

Three days later, she says, "You should have given me more warning!"
"What?" he asks, honestly confused.
"I couldn't do anything--it's just a little trifle," she says.
But it isn't.
It's a clay Ferris wheel. He hasn't ever seen her do anything like it before; it couldn't have been spun on a wheel. She must have made it with her own hands.
It must have taken a long time.
"Did you sleep at all these last few days, Ayu?" he asks, unable to take his eyes off his gift.
"Of course I did!" she says, too strongly, and he knows she didn't.
"I don't know what to say," he says.
"You say thank you," she says. "And I'll apologize for it being so boring, and you'll insist you like it, and I'll--"
He kisses her.
He has never kissed her before.
"Thank you," he says.
"Oh," she says.
