The Bad News

*sigh*

Technology hates me, and the feeling is mutual.

I just wanted to do something simple. It was getting to be time to reinstall the OS on the main machine. Too many little quirks I couldn't fix, too many kernel panics, especially in the last couple of days.

Of course, what should be simple and relatively painless routine task turns into a stress-filled ordeal with me. It's getting to be exactly what I expect, it happens so often.

First, I back everything up. No problems there. Internal 250GB drive (same size as the boot drive) dump it all on there. Then, get the OS X 10.5 DVD, reboot. Doesn't work. Get the backup copy. Doesn't work. Force the issue at boot-time by holding the "C" key. Doesn't work. Make a netboot volume and attempt to netboot from the sever. Server's key is expired. Google for an hour, find a key, put it in. Try netboot again. Machine kernel panics on netboot. Won't come out of trying to netboot for anything I try, up to me physically yanking the ethernet cord. Then it boots. Boot back up, change the boot volume to my bootable utility disc. Used that to fuck around, try to force a boot from the 10.5 DVD. No luck. Finally, I booted up in firewire target disk mode and used the laptop to wipe the boot drive. Then, I was able to use one of the 10.5 DVDs to boot up and install.

The truly delightful part came about three minutes after the install was complete. I was adjusting some display settings, and there was a kernel panic. Virgin install, didn't even change anything other than the display settings. So I'm going to have to take it back to Apple on my day off. More fun.

So until I make good use of my AppleCare, I'm going to be stuck with just the laptop as a primary machine. And compared with the desktop, it's practically an abacus. So, I won't be around for a while.
