As mentioned yesterday, the film we screened last night was Symbol. We knew going in that it would be a strange one, as this was the same director who gave us the wacky Dainipponjin.
Symbol is, indeed, a very, very odd and beguiling movie. I'm still not certain I fully understood it, but it was a heck of a lot of fun to watch. In short, a man wakes up in a large white room with no windows, no doors, and no idea how he got there. Cherubs appear out of the walls, then they disappear back into the walls, except their penises, yes, their little cherub penises, are left on the wall. Our protagonist is now in a sterile white room covered in cherub penises, and he discovers that by pressing on the penises, like you would a lever, that various objects (sushi, a toothbrush, a giant vase, a rope, a toy baseball bat, graphic novels, etc.) appear. Yes, it's as strange as it sounds. Our unnamed protagonist tries to use these appearing objects to find a way out of the room.
It's a manic and wild film. I can't say I loved it (though my son did), but you'll not see its like anywhere else anytime soon.
