I saw the latest X-Men movie last weekend. I wasn't very impressed, and my overall impression was one of sheer laziness. The writing was lazy (avoiding all intelligent discussion of 1960's sexism and racism, despite that the whole point of the X-Men franchise was to create an allegory to discuss oppression and marginalisation), the costuming was lazy, very good actors had very little to work with (the better actors stole the film).
It made me disappointed, but at least I didn't spend money on it. (I got free movie tickets for Administrative Professionals' Day, a couple of months ago.*) I have one ticket left, so I am considering what my next movie shall be.
I've been looking into other vintage stores here, which has proved to be a difficult task. There are stores still turning up in online searches that have closed down, to the point where I'm no longer sure if the stores I have on my list even exist any more, let alone have any idea of what their actual opening hours are (is it so hard to maintain a website?).
This evening after work I hunted down some stores on the same street - which turn out to exist. However, despite one advertising being open till 8pm-ish, turned out to be closed. The other one I got there with half an hour to spare, so had a quick look through before leaving. Both of the stores don't bother opening on the weekends (I don't blame them, the lady who owns the store which was open told me how rarely they get foot traffic after work and on the weekends).
However, the only time I have to go exploring is on the weekends, especially when stores open after I'm at work and close before I get out. I don't tend to go out at lunch times, mostly because I spend a lot less if I bring lunch with me and avoid walking around stores. Also, I avoid crowds this way. Also, I like using the time to catch up on my RSS feed.
Anyway. I am frustrated as a shopper, and understand their frustration as store owners. I wish Adelaide would undergo the culture shift that would make it possible for longer opening hours and greater store competition. I also wish these stores would embrace technology and use websites and social media more effectively! Using Facebook alone is just lazy**!
I saw some pretty dresses tonight, but nothing that called out to me. Of course, I didn't get to try anything on but hopefully I'll do that in the coming week.
Tonight has convinced me to abandon that white dress I was originally thinking about. The department store doesn't need me as much as the tiny stores do, and it'll mean I'll have something more unique to Adelaide as a practical memento.
Now I just hope I find something I really love...
* Apparently, in Adelaide Business Development staff are considered Administrative staff - I suspect East Coast does not classify us this way in order to save money on Administrative Professionals' Day.
** And I'm not just saying that because I'm not on Facebook! It's only mostly why I'm saying that!
