31 Days Exchange - The Unknown Legacy

Title: The Unknown Legacy
Day/Theme: 31st March 2011; did you steal that from a greeting card?
Series: Code Geass
Character/Pairing: Charles, Marianne; Charles/Marianne, briefly mentions Lelouch/C.C.
Rating: C (for crack-ish humour)

This was it. The setting was right, the mood was perfect and she didn't suspect a thing.

Gulping audibly - had it been this hard previously? he couldn't remember - as he dropped down on one knee before Marianne, Charles noted the surprised look on her face before he summoned his courage and dove in.

"Marianne," he started as he presented the ring, "light of my existence, queen of my heart, sun of my galaxy, you have brought me unmeasurable amounts of joy throughout the brief time I've known you. I think of you by day and dream of you by night. Ever since you entered my life, I have never been happier. If you were to leave it, I would be crushed beyond all belief. You are an angel, a perfect rose that I have been fortunate enough to find in this vast world full of thorns. I cannot imagine living without you. That is why I am here before you now, wearing my heart on my sleeve as I present my soul at your feet. Will you accept this foolish man before you as your husband for the rest of your life?"

Charles had expected a number of reactions. Maybe she would cry tears of joy as she nodded her consent, having been rendered speechless. Maybe she would smile gently and say "yes". Maybe (and this possibility broke his heart to even consider it) she would frown and tell him that she didn't love him enough to marry him.

He hadn't expected her to burst into a bout of loud, uncontrollable laughter. He watched, dumbfounded, as the usually regal woman was reduced to a shaking, giddy heap.

It had kind of hurt, actually.

Eventually she calmed down enough to accept his proposal, which brightened his mood considerably. However, she had one condition: he was to either fire the person who helped him write that speech or never write his own again, whichever it was. He had happily obliged.

Years later, their son barely escaped becoming just like his father in the romance department by fortunately falling in love with someone who frequently bickered with him - affectionately, of course... most of the time - and thus didn't give him the chance to compose any sappy love confessions or proposals.
