Title: Muted
Day/Theme: 24th June 2010; floating in empty space
Series: Firefly
Character(s)/Pairing(s): River, mentions others
Rating: G
Notes: Inspired by the space scene in Bushwhacked.
It might be a little exaggerated, but River thinks no one might appreciate being in space more than she does. Mal could compete, though, considering how much he loves Serenity... but that would be disgressing.
Sure, being in space means being on the move which means staying far, far away from the Alliance, and that in turn means not going back to the Academy. Ever. And that is always a very good thing.
But the one thing the girl enjoys the most about outer space is how quiet it is in the vast nothingness. (Her dear brother, on the other hand, is terrified of the vacuum. It seems they're very different in that sense.)
A non-psychic can never appreciate what it's like to only hear their own voice in their head. To only feel their own emotions. To have their mind to themselves for that one moment, however short it is. This star-dusted blackness, however, grants her that sanctuary.
It's the most treasured experience for a soul so ravaged by the demons of others.
It takes some effort, but eventually Mal agrees to let her stay out just for a bit every once in a while. He acts like a grumpy old man when he does, and she feels like reminding him it's pointless to try and lie to her of all people. Simon fusses as expected - something about safety - and Kaylee has to help her calm him down. Everyone fusses, actually, in their own little way - except Jayne, obviously - and it's nice when people care.
Still, River knows better than anyone else how sublimely wonderful it is to have some real piece and quiet. She wastes no opportunity to indulge herself in the luxury.
