Logic dictated that this fight was going to end badly. As in cough-out-organs-and-die-a-messy-death badly. The evidence to support it lay on the battlefield: Unit-02 was a mangled piece of junk and Unit-00... the only parts of it left were the head and leg stumps. As if that weren't enough, bad luck had it that Unit-01 would only be active for five minutes.
Well, Shinji thought, logic could go to hell with the rest of the world.
NERV had used him. Father had called him here, manipulated him then tossed him out when he wouldn't do his dirty work anymore. Misato only cared because it was part of her job. So did everyone else. Asuka, although an all-round pain in the neck, had been a comrade - his friend - but she was gone now. Thanks to NERV. Thanks to Father.
Ayanami was the last good thing left that had come out of it all. Ayanami had smiled at him, thanked him, tried to help heal the rift between him and Father - as useless as that effort was now. She had cared; truly, sincerely and for no other reason besides the fact that she simply cared. And now this Angel had her.
Abruptly his five minutes ran out and the Third Child found himself at the mercy of his enemy's vast power. There was pain - a whole lot of pain - but he forced himself to overcome it; he'd felt worse. In the darkness of the plug, the boy allowed his bottled-up fury to take over him.
To hell with NERV. To hell with Father. To hell with the Angel. To hell with the world.
He was going to get Ayanami back regardless of the consequences. Nothing else mattered.
