Summary: Chace's cousin comes to live with him. She has to adjust to her new life in Hollywood, while dealing with a tragedy that destroyed her life and she finds love along the way.
I waited patiently at the baggage claim for my cousin. Moving to West Hollywood wasn't something I was ready for, but I needed to get out of Delaware. There was nothing left for me there anymore. Glancing at my watch, I wondered what living with Chace would be like. He was my best friend. We had grown up together in Texas until my father had to move us to Delaware because of his job. Chace and I kept in touch, but it just wasn't the same. The thought of my parents caused my eyes to well, but before any tears fell, I heard someone calling my name.
"Misty!"
Turning my head, I smiled at the sight of my favorite cousin running towards me. Not being able to contain my happiness, I ran towards him meeting him halfway, jumping into his arms.
"I thought you forgot about me," I laughed as he swung me around.
"Of course not. Massive traffic and my cell phone died. I'm so sorry," Chace replied putting me back on my feet. He grabbed my bag from my hand, slinging it over his shoulder. "Is this all you have?"
Sadness filled my eyes and I just nodded my head.
"We'll get you new stuff. That was stupid of me. I'm sorry, Misty," said Chace.
"It's okay. Don't worry about it."
Giving me a comforting smile, Chace took my hand pulling me towards his car. We came to stand beside a black Jeep Cherokee. Chace had never been one to be flashy, but he still had great taste.
"Nice car," I said.
"I know," he replied.
Rolling my eyes, I opened the passenger door climbing inside as my cousin threw my bag into the trunk. The beginning of the ride to Chace's house was silent. I couldn't stop myself from thinking about my parents again. I missed them so much. The fire had not only destroyed every possession I owned, but it took my mother and father's life, too. It had been so hard dealing with everything. Thankfully, Chace and his family had come for support and for anything else I needed. Unfortunately, my parents hadn't been as well off as I thought. After paying off funeral expenses and paying off their debts, I had nothing.
Chace, being my best friend and more like an older brother then a cousin, immediately suggested I come live with him. At first I declined, not wanting to impose, but after a long lecture from him about family and how I was being stupid, I finally, but reluctantly agreed. And now here I was in West Hollywood whether I was ready for it or not.
Traffic hadn't seemed to disperse as we drove away from the airport towards Chace's home. So we sat in the line of cars, unmoving.
"So, looking forward to living out here?" Chace asked.
I snorted. "Definitely not ready to have to see your face everyday."
"Ha ha. I can't seem to remember why I ever liked you."
"I was thinking the same thing."
Chace and I burst into laughter. After we calmed down, he turned to me with a serious expression on his face.
"Misty, how are you? Really?"
"I'm fine," I replied, ignoring his gaze.
"Misty..." Chace said gently.
"I...I don't know how I am, Chace. I can't sleep. I have nightmares about the fire almost every night. I hear their screams in my head. I can't understand why I was able to get out and they weren't. It's just not fair."
"It's going to take time. It just happened a few weeks ago. You can't expect to get over it that quickly. You obviously were meant to live for whatever purpose. Aunt Layla and Uncle James wouldn't have wanted anything to happen to you. They're probably looking down on you right now happy that you're alive. They loved you."
Tears fell down my cheeks as Chace finished speaking. "I know," I replied. "But I feel like its never going to get easier."
Chace patted my leg reassuringly. "It will. I promise. And I'm here for you, always."
"Thanks."
"Of course."
Leaning my forehead against the window, I sighed heavily willing the tears to stop. Eventually they did, and I fell asleep for the rest of the ride.
-----------------
When we arrived at Chace's home, he shook me gently waking me from my slumber. He smiled at me as he climbed out of the car to grab my bag. I opened the passenger door, setting my feet on the concrete and looked up in awe at the house that stood before me. It was rather large, something I hadn't expected of him, but then again I had to remember that my cousin was a big movie and television star now. Things were bound to change.
"This place is huge..." I said gaping.
Chace laughed coming to stand beside me. "Close your mouth. It's unattractive. Besides, I needed a few extra bedrooms."
Furrowing my brow in confusion, I followed him to the front door. "Why did you need a few extra bedrooms?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "Well, Toby, Taylor and Sebastian come over quite a bit and hang out. And more often then not stay over a night or two."
"Oh. They were in the Covenant with you right?"
"Yup," Chace replied as he pushed open the front door. He stepped in, gesturing for me to follow and I did.
"Are they going to mind me staying here?" I asked worriedly.
"No they're good guys. Toby's here the most. Besides they really don't have a say anyway. It's my house. And as long as you don't mind living with four guys most of the time we'll be good."
I snorted. "I think I'll be fine."
Chace narrowed his eyes at my comment. "Whatever you're thinking...just no."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Right. The fact that three hot guys will literally be sleeping in rooms next to you and living with you has no effect on you at all?"
"I love you?" I offered innocently trying to hide my smile.
"Nice try. I guess I'll show you your room. I've got a meeting with my agent later. Will you be okay here by yourself?" Chace questioned as I followed him to my new room.
"Yeah. I was just going to sleep anyway. That's all I seem to be doing these days."
"Well, Toby might be here before me. He's got a few promotions today for his new movie, but that's it. I promise he'll be on his best behavior."
I raised an eyebrow at my cousin's words. "Uh, should I be worried?"
"Maybe just a little," he replied chuckling.
We climbed the stairs to the second floor and I could not take my eyes off the decor. Chace may have been a guy but he had impeccable taste. Part of me wondered if my other cousin, Chace's sister, Candice, had anything to do with it. It was manly, yet sophisticated. For some reason that thought made me giggle out loud. Chace looked at me strangely.
"Sorry, made myself laugh," I stated.
"Wow. You're special," he replied back shaking his head.
The long hallway on the second floor seemed to go on forever. We passed his bedroom which he pointed out. He said he'd let me see the inside once it was cleaned. There were two more doors on the right which belonged to Taylor and Sebastian. And there were two more on the left. One was Toby's and the other was mine. Chace turned the knob letting me step inside first. I gasped. It was beautiful.
The walls were painted white. Black and white pictures were hanging of all the places I had told Chace I'd one day like to visit. The bed was a canopy and the sheets were my favorite color blue. There was a balcony and my own large bathroom. But the best part of my new room were the bookshelves that lined the left side of the room. I slowly walked over to the shelves glancing at the books that filled them.
"Chace...this is too much," I whispered.
"No its not. We're family and since you're living here I wanted you to feel at home," he replied placing my bag on the floor. "And tomorrow I'll give you money to go shopping and get whatever else you need. I'd go with you, but I'm a guy and not really one for shopping so..."
"Thank you so much. For everything. I don't know what I'd do without you. Have I told you that you're my favorite cousin?"
Smiling, Chace came towards me and kissed my forehead with brotherly affection. He hugged me tightly before leaving me to get some rest.
--------------------
I laid in bed for awhile as sleep continued to evade me. I stared at the canopy above my bed completely dazed, lost in my own world. My mind wouldn't stop running. My parents, the fire, leaving Delaware, and starting over here was almost too much. I really wasn't sure that I was strong enough to handle it. I felt completely alone. No matter what Chace said, I felt like I was intruding on his life by living with him. Especially now that I knew he lived with three other people the majority of the time. I'd never met any of his friends before so I was slightly nervous, but I'd decided that I was pretty much going to stay out of the way and keep to myself. It was better that way. I didn't want to care about anyone else or make new friends. What's the point? There's a possibility you're going to lose them anyway. Chace was my cousin, my big brother, my best friend, but I didn't feel like I really knew him anymore. I was happy for his success but this was the first time, besides my parents funeral, that I had seen him in a couple of years. I couldn't hold it against him though. He was doing what he wanted and he was happy. That's all that really mattered.
As my mind wandered, I finally drifted into slumber.
The fire surrounded them as they looked at me with horrified expressions on their faces.
"Please! Misty, help us!" my mother screamed.
I tried to step through the flames, but it burned my skin. I yelled in pain stepping back. I could see the skin of both my parents blistering. My mother had tears in her eyes as she held onto my father.
"Don't you love us? Help us! We're your parents!" my father said.
"I do love you. I can't get through. I'm trying," I cried. The flames encircling them grew larger. I searched the room for anything to help me get through, to save them, but there was nothing but darkness. I heard the screams from my mother and father as they grew louder. It was like their skin was melting away.
"No! Mom! Dad! I'm sorry! I'm sorry I couldn't save you!"
"How could you do this to us?!"
They were the last words from my mother's mouth. I watched them burn, clinging to each other and I couldn't stop the scream that escaped from my lips.
I shot up out of bed, sweating from the nightmare that had invaded my sleep. I placed a hand on my chest to calm my heavy breathing, as I felt tears fall from my eyes for the second time that day. Their screams continued to echo in my head.
I heard the sound of footsteps running up the stairs and down the hall, stopping at my room. Without knocking, the bedroom door opened slowly. It was Chace's friend Toby. He glanced around the room before his eyes settled on me in my bed.
He cleared his throat, running a hand through his hair. "Uh...I heard you scream. You alright?"
I only nodded. I was still too upset from my nightmare to speak.
"Then why are you crying?" he asked, stepping further into the room.
"N...nightmare.." I stammered. My heart was beating so quick and I couldn't tell if it was because of the adrenaline from the dream or the gorgeous man standing in front of me.
"Do you want me to call Chace?" he asked.
I shook my head no. "He's with his agent, I don't want to bother him."
"Ok. Well, uh, my name is Toby. You're Misty right?"
I nodded again.
"Chace told me all about you. And the others, too. He should be back soon. Do you want anything?"
Wiping the tears with the back of my hand, I shook my head and smiled in thanks. There was silence for a few moments, when his next question caught me completely off guard.
"Was it your parents?" he asked.
"How do you know about them?" My voice broke, as I tried to stop the tears.
"Chace told me."
"Oh," I replied. Silence again.
"Well, was it?" Toby pressed.
"Yes, but I really don't want to talk about it, if you don't mind," I answered. I was slightly upset at the fact that Chace had told a complete stranger about my parents. But then again, this was Chace's friends and it was his aunt and uncle. He was probably upset about it, too. I had the sudden realization that I'd been rather selfish. They were my parents, yes, but they were Chace's family, too.
Toby ran a hand through his hair. "It's fine. I just...well, Chace told me to take care of you while he was gone. Are you sure you don't need anything?"
"Just sleep, which seems to be impossible to get anymore," I said, laying back against the pillows.
"I don't know what I should do. Maybe I should call Chace. You really don't look so good," stated Toby as he looked at the bags under my eyes and pasty skin. I really did look like I'd been to hell and back.
I sat up once again, waving my hands. "No, no. Please don't call him. He's worried about me enough as it is. He's letting me live here with him and being all kinds of generous. I don't want to burden him while I'm here. I'll deal with this. I'm sorry I bothered you, too."
Toby gave me a strange look when I said this. I just shrugged my shoulders in response to his gaze. I turned away from those intense blue eyes, rubbing a hand against my forehead. I felt a headache coming on. Great. Just what I needed.
"Um...I'm going to try and get back to sleep. Hopefully."
"Okay. Well, I'll leave you to it. If you need anything...I guess let me know."
"Yeah. I'm sorry this had to be our first meeting, but thanks for running to my rescue."
He smiled and I felt a small tug on my heart. "Anytime. I'll see you later, I'm sure."
I smiled back. "Okay."
I laid back down, when Toby left my room, closing the door behind him. I had the strangest feeling that my new life was definitely going to get interesting.
