Weekly gratitude post #25: the birthday weekend.

Feb 28, 2016 18:12

It was my birthday on Friday. Today's my mum's birthday and in a couple of days it will be my sister's birthday. We don't make a big deal out of birthdays, we just want to be together. And isn't that just the best thing?

Today I am grateful for all the lessons I've learned over the past year. As is often the case, some of them were pleasant and others decidedly less so but I do hope that I have managed to grow somehow. As a teacher, I know only too well that learning is not something you do only up to a certain point. You always continue to learn. It's a thing that tends to de-motivate some of my students. With me, it's the opposite. I love that there's always an opportunity to go further. That entire "be in love with the journey, not the destinationl" thing has never been more true for me. I can't see 100% where I'm going, nor would I want that. But I rather love the path I am on. And that's an utterly wonderful and exciting feeling.

Since my family is extremely camera-shy, as you might have noticed, this blog post will only include flowers & desserts. :P

I always get the most beautiful flowers.

Just look at the colour of that tulip. Isn't it stunning?

These are damson jam cakes with curd cheese filling which we had on Friday. They didn't end up looking as nice as they should've done because this was the first time we made them all gluten-free. They tasted fantastic, though.

Ah, my favourite birthday present.

We also had an incredibly delicious sponge with tinned tangerines and fresh raspberries and blueberries. On the top we put the juice from tinned tangerines mixed with a bit of elderberry syrup and starch. The end result was a super fruity, fluffy, light, not too sweet sponge ever and I loved it.

How did you spend your last February weekend?

Oh and a little bit off topic: I'm currently making an early grey flavoured granola for tomorrow's breakfast for the first time ever. I'll keep you posted on the result!
