Start by leaving a long loose thread out of your machine. Set the machine to the longest stitch, this is usually called a basting stitch. Set the tension so that it is loose. Sew along the length that needs to be gathered and when you finish leave a long piece at the end. Grab one of the end threads and start pushing the fabric up the thread to the center of the area to be gathered. Do this from both ends. Oh, before you start gathering, you should have marked places where the gathered piece meets matches up to the piece to which it connects and pin the two pieces together, ie. center front, center back and sides of a skirt to a waistband. Once the pieces are pinned together properly, then start the gathering. Once a section is gathered to the proper length, add a few more pins to secure it in place. Once the gathering is done, stitch the pieces together with your normal stitch size ( ... )

Thank you, that worked perfect! Any ideas on how to get wrinkles out of velveteen when I don't have time to take it to a dry cleaner?

Sorry, haven't logged in in several days.

Velveteen, if it's 100% cotton, turn it wrong side up on an ironing board an press it or wet a hand towel and through the velveteen and the hand towel in the dryer on low heat for about 20-30 minutes :)
