2 Questions on Money and Football

I have two questions for you.
Money:
1. Can anyone explain the money system used in 1973, in comparison to the one used now? I'm looking for a coin to coin breakdown, if possible. I'm not sure when the changed occurred--would Sam know how to count money in that system, or would it confuse him?
Football:
2. From what I understand, what we now call a coach was once known as a trainer. Was this the case in 1973? Any idea when the change was made? Has a manager always been called such? It confuses me as an American b/c what I think of as a coach is apparently what a manager is in the UK...
