WHAT: Matthew really needed a job.
Matthew was nervous. Anyone glancing his way, even a complete stranger, would have noticed. Not that Matt was worried, since people rarely seemed to notice him in the first place. And in fact that's exactly what Matt was worried about.
You see, Matthew needed a job. His part of the rent on his and Alfred's apartment wasn't small, and he only had so much money left in his bank account from his previous jobs. Being in between jobs, and in need of money, would have been enough to put anyone in quite an anxious mood, however, this was only one small reason for Matt's anxiety. To be more specific Matt's initial anxiety over being in between job's was made worse by the fact that all his previous job's had ended in complete and utter failure. Matt had a small problem that seemed to prevent him from maintaining a job. This problem was that Matthew was invisible.
All right, well, he wasn't actually invisible. Light reflected off him, and therefore others were physically capable of seeing him, but for some strange reason, they didn't. It was as though they saw him as a part of the scenery. He just blended in with the background, and it was hard to work when people didn't see you. It was hard to work when customers didn't see you.
It was for this reason that Matt had been fired from all his previous jobs. His time spent working at a store's help desk, in which people tended to not ask "empty" desks for help, and then complain to management, and the time's he'd tried to work at restaurants, in which people didn't ask the "empty" host's desk to be seated, and seemed incapable of realizing their waiter was there and asking to take their orders, and then complained to management, had not only left him with a distinct feeling of hopelessness, but also an incredible fear of working. It was this fear that made him nervous about looking for jobs. A fear that he would not have been able to brave were it not for eminent threat of homelessness not having a job implied.
And it was with all these worries that our nervous Matthew walked into Madame Maime's Miracles looking for a job.
