WHO: Lyndsey and Marianne WHEN: Evening of Saturday the 22nd of January (after Marianne's blog post) WHERE: Outside Celeste Bakery WHAT: Proposal attempt #3487...
It was rather chilly outside. Even huddled down in her new trench coat and neck buried in her scarf she couldn't help wanting to be inside. But Lyndsey had wanted to go for a walk and well... She honestly wasn't in the mood to fight his curious desires tonight anyway. Her gut was still uneasy, her request to Attis poisoning her mind and making her unable to fully focus on the small, odd smile that Lyn was giving her.
They're sweet, not as sweet at you though.
Marianne blinked, looking up at the Scot and unable to keep from giving a small laugh. "Oh Lyn," she giggled behind her coffee cup, taking a small sip as well and shaking her head. This is why she fell for him all those years ago. Not for his suave nature, not for his smooth talk- hell, all of those things were opposite of Lyn's nature.
But Marianne loved him for that, and it only took a small line like that to remember.
"You flatter me so!" she teased lightly back, softly rubbing her elbow at his side. "Mm- oh, come on! It is too cold to stay in one place, unless you will keep me warm cherant~"
Spluttering his coffee as the elbow against his rib, Lyndsey looked over at Marianne, already going red from embarrassment. "As long as you enjoy it." he mumbled, wrapping his arm around her and glad that she appreciated that very bad line. She always did though, each and every time they came stumbling out of his mouth. He laughed softly at her complaint about the temperature. He always prepared colder and wetter weather, not even his time in...
Closing his eyes, he tried to push that particular train of thought out of his mind, knowing that it wouldn't stray far really. "Annie..." He paused, throwing his half drank coffee into a bin and sticking his hand into the pocket, making sure that the red box was still there. Grasping at her hand, he kissed it before letting it go. "There's something I really what to ask you but I need to tell you something first. The war, it's still going on...in here ah me'n" He said, tapping at his head. "Still haven't escaped it, why ah donnae really stay at y'urs. Ah j'st wanna make shure that ye donnae mind it b'fore ah ask ye mah questi'n..." He explained, biting at his lip hard.
Marianne felt her heart flutter and with a quick bite she finished the last of her small snack and tossed her almost-full cup of coffee away too. Other matters needed attending to! She grabbed his hand with both of her own and looked up at him with bright blue eyes. "Ah... it would, probably be a good time for, opening up, oui?" she breathed out quietly. "Before any- questions. Ah-! You know you can tell me anything Lyn, cherant. Mon coeur, je t'aime."
Her heart felt like it was going to beat right out of her chest, and she couldn't help holding his hand a little tighter. "Talk to me Lyn... You know it has bothered me forever why you 'aven't stayed over..."
"Ay- Oui." The French word sounded awkward with his accent but it seemed only fair since Marianne was practically always expected to speak English round him, unless she wanted everything to be 'une jupe rose'.
Taking a deep breath, Lyndsey placed his free hand on top of hers. "Ah...Ah get nightmares. Fr'm whit happened there, that aint gonna leave meh any time soon." He took another deep breath, remembering all the times he had gone through this spiel at group meetings. Ivana had been the only one to really listen to him at any of those sessions he attended, probably why they're still in contact. "A-Ah am gettin' better but...it still happ'ns, like this morning." A weak smile was on his lips, glad to finally get that off his chest for her. Kissing her gently, he took a step back. "Y-ye donna mind...r-right?"
His hand was in the jacket pocket again, checking on the ring.
Everything about Lyn seemed to fall slowly into place as Marianne watched him. She barely had time to acknowledge the kiss before he was already pulling back. "Lyn... Oh Lyn," she said quietly. "You know I'll do anything for you. I just want to be there to help. If you'll give me zat chance I will take it gladly but-"
The woman paused, reaching up and holding herself with one arm. Honesty- It was said to be the best policy right? And this had obviously been difficult for Lyn to talk about. "I just... I 'ave something I need to tell you as well-"
"It's... it's ancient history- now- but... I think you should know."
"Ye can tell me." Lyndsey said, accent fading slightly as he calmed down. Pulling her close, he ran his fingers through her hair, not really caring if he messed up whatever style she had it in. "You've listened to my demons...it's only fair."
What could exactly be wrong in his Annie's life? Probably something small. "It's okay." He murmured, kissing her head.
Marianne gave a small, weak shadow of a smile. Her hands went up and tightened in Lyn's jacket, brushing off a small piece of lint as she tried to form the words in her mind. She'd tried to think of how to say it a million times before now, but had never managed to figure out how she actually would. Now or never, she supposed.
"Do you... remember when we were both younger? You had a visit near my school and... we were together for the first time?" she asked softly. She didn't wait for a response.
"I... had a pregnancy," she whispered, staring at Lyn's chest. "I... only discovered when you had already left and- and I miscarried at three months."
There. She'd said it. And she could finally look up into his eyes again, her own blue one misting slightly as she gave him a watery smile. The weight had definitely started to lift off of her shoulders-
"Aye...." When they had meet in Paris during his school trip there and he had managed to sneak her into his hotel room and they...? Twirling a few strands of her hair around his fingers he cooed softly. "It's oka y-"
He stopped as soon Marianne began to speak, eyes widening as he listened. He got her pregnant?! But he was sure he had worn protection. He held her close but was unable to stop the bitter laugh. "'H-How to tell me'. Jesus! Annie do you think I would of cared how you told meh! Ye shoulda j'st called! Whit the hell were ye thinkin' tryin' tae gae thr'ugh it by yerself!? Ah shoulda been there fer ye!" He didn't know when he had grabbed a hold of her shoulders but he had, was even starting to shake her. "Did ye no' want it? 'C'use if that w's the case then ye didnae tell meh...'onestly."
Letting go of her gingerly, he took a few steps back, running his fingers through his hair. "A-Ah'm sorry...mahbeh this wasnae mah best idea." He paused, pulling out the small red box and throwing it Marianne. "Think...think o' it as a silly present." He said, giving her an awkward smile before turning and fleeing from his...fleeing from Annie...
Marianne almost couldn't move as Lyn started to practically yell, grabbing her and shaking her nearly violently. Her heart had felt like it had completely stopped, everything around them freezing as he said those condemning words.
Did ye no' want it?"
She could feel herself start to tremble as he finally released her, grabbing something and throwing it at her. She just barely registered the velvet box she had somehow caught.
"L-Lyndsey..."
She didn't remember walking home in the cold, nor did she remember waving Amelia and Madison off as she walked to her bedroom, locked herself inside and curled up, quietly allowing herself a small breakdown in the privacy of her own lonely bedroom.
They're sweet, not as sweet at you though.
