Who: Kiku and Heracles (AT LAST) When: Jan 22, afternoon Where: Book Alley What: The period of isolation is over, so why not begin some new...diplomatic relations?
For Heracles, he found that the best way for him to relax, outside of curling up with his cats and taking a nap, was to lose himself in the philosophy or literature sections of the local bookstore. The staff there knew him by name at this point, and also that he liked to read Plato and his favorite animal was the cat, and... that was about it, since Heracles didn't really open up to them that much beyond that. But they left him well enough alone anyway, so he didn't really mind either way.
Today, to his surprise, there was another person occupying his little nook that usually was empty save for himself. He looked young-ish, but maybe a little bit older than himself? Heracles guessed. He had short, dark hair and attractive almond-shaped eyes that were focused on... Socrates? Had he met another philosophy enthusiast? The other man looked a little lost, he noticed as he sat down in his usual chair and began going through his backpack, looking for a book. He thought about just letting him go about his own business, but the longer he sat, the more he was curious as to what part of the book he was at.
Looking up, Heracles tapped his foot a little anxiously and asked quietly, "Um, mind if I ask what you're reading?" It sounded kind of lame to him once the words came out, but there they were.
With a little start, Kiku looked up, his concentration snapped. When he picked up Greek philosophy, he had not been expecting to meet someone...more fitting of Greek mythology. Color quickly rising to his cheeks, he realized that he'd been asked a question.
"O-oh...I'm reading..." He flipped over the book, showing the cover. "Phaedo. It's...Plato, I think." Kiku smiled sheepishly, joking. "Light reading."
He was more than a little surprised to have been approached in the bookstore, especially in the philosophy section. Occasionally, if he was near the manga it wasn't unheard of, but never anywhere else. But...if it was polite conversation the stranger was after, he could stand to oblige him a little while.
Phaedo; he'd read it a couple times, and it was definitely one of the more interesting of Plato's works, if not a little headache-inducing. Heracles grinned a little bit and nodded. "Light reading. Right... " He leaned forward in his chair. "Hey, you're not a student here or anything, are you?" He was pretty sure he'd never seen the guy around on campus, but it seemed like most people he encountered around here wouldn't go for Plato unless they were getting graded on it. Plus, it looked like he'd been taking notes, too. And he looked young enough, so he thought he'd try.
Kiku sat a little straighter as the man leaned towards him, finding himself a little mesmerized by the color of his eyes. Not that he wasn't used to seeing people with blue or green or hazel eyes by now, but occasionally he would be caught off guard by the intensity of a color, or something he found to be particularly unusual or unnatural or exotic. Exotic definitely fit this person...
But he found himself a little disappointed when the (near inevitable) question was asked. "No...I've not been a student for quite some time." From the question, he assumed that he'd made yet another acquaintance at least ten, if not twelve or thirteen years his junior.
Heracles balked a little at the way the other man formed his sentences, and it took him a second to process what he'd said. He noticed he had a bit of an accent, too. "Oh, uh, sorry," he muttered and looked away in a few different directions, a telltale sign that he was a little embarrassed. "You just looked kinda young." Maybe he should shut up now. But wasn't that like a compliment if you were older?
"Uh, Heracles, by the way," he continued, trying to get off the subject before he dug himself any deeper, and stuck his hand out for the stranger to shake.
He took the offered hand, noting right away an underlying firmness that contrasted with the gentleness of his expression. But then again, it seemed to match well with his overall physique and...
"Ah, Kiku. Pleased to meet you..." He nodded to hide his slight blush, unconsciously pulling Phaedo closer to his chest. He had never been very good at meeting new people.
He shook Kiku's hand, and Heracles found his grip satisfying enough, considering that Kiku was a bit smaller than himself and almost... dainty? He wasn't sure if that was the best way to describe another man and maybe he needed to crack open a thesaurus one of these days and educate himself, but for now he was just interested in how much of a philosophy fan this guy was. It really would be nice to have someone to discuss his thoughts and ideas with.
"So, how are you liking Phaedo so far?" he asked, grabbing a stepstool that was resting against a bookshelf and making an impromptu chair out of it. "Been awhile since I read it, but I did a paper on it once..."
