As a tutor for one of the most difficult of all magical subjects - Transfiguration - it was a wonder how the most simplistic course slipped through his mind like an unobtainable fog: a fog that currently represented the milk in his teacup. He liked logic, and Transfiguration, Potions, Charms and even History of Magic was logical, but Divination was entirely abstract. As he downed the last unfortunate sip of tea, the peppermint aftertaste of Francis's potion still overpowering everything he ate, he set the teacup down between he and Emiliana while his chin rested dully on the page divider of his copy of Unfogging the Future.

A chocolate frog beside him twitched in its pentagonal case; Ivan reached over to pull it open, caught it barely by the toe before it could leap into the bookshelf before him. The little creature struggled to break free, thus losing one of its chocolate limbs as it fell onto the table. Ivan sucked absentmindedly on the sweet limb, caught his prey between his fingers again, and proceeded to yank off the other three, and finally bite off its head.

"They all look like mounds of tealeaves to me," he muttered bitterly against the pages.

"Really?" Emi asked, eyes trained on the cup of tea between them. "I think it looks like an acorn. Sort of. Okay, they do look like mounds of tealeaves. But mounds of tealeaves that...kind of resemble an acorn?" Her gaze lifted to lock with Ivan's, a small pout tugging at her lips before she leaned back against her chair.

Reaching over to flip through her copy of Unfogging the Future, Emi quickly skimmed a page before tapping her finger against the book. "An acorn represents...windfall and unexpected gold." She paused. "Well, at least it isn't a grim?" She supplied hopefully, sheepish smile now gracing her lips. Another quick glance at the tealeaves and she suddenly shrugged. "It's an either an acorn or a deformed club. I suppose we should go with the one that's lease, eh, daunting, yeah?"

"So you're telling me that I should expect either gold or an attack," he confirmed with a quirked brow. "Or that I will be attacked and receive gold for it, or receive gold and then be attacked for it." A small smile played at his lips, but it was as transient as when it came, and his forehead met the pages of the book. "Professor Atthis can't honestly expect me to believe that if I expect the way I drink tea can change my fate. What if I were to spit tea back into that cup? Maybe the blob will change into the likeness of a cross and I'll be suffering for my gold."

"I think..." Emi started, a grin beginning to form on her lips. "That you're going to be attacked by gold coins. Pelted with them, really." She reached over to squeeze his arm in faux act of comfort. "But that'll be the price to pay for your sudden wealth, Ivan."

She pulled back to fix the teacup with a frown, fingertip jabbing it in an almost accusing manner. "Try not to spit it back, though. You might upset the Fates and, who knows? It might change into a grim or a skull the next time around - and all because you doubted the powers of these, ah, magic tealeaves."

H-how cruel... das_vedanya October 19 2010, 17:33:34 UTC
He stared at her long and hard, speechless. Somewhere beside them, another chocolate frog croaked inside his pentagonal prison, awaiting the wrath of Ivan's teeth. Then he ducked his head into his book, shoulders twitching with laughter, and his lungs quaking from mirth. "Now I see why you do so well in this class."

Then he raised his head and met her sarcastic smile. "So I'm going to be attacked by gold coins. Lovely."

Her grin returned, a soft laugh escaping her lips as she shook her head. Plucking her quill up, Emi paused, noticing the sudden croaking of the Chocolate Frog beside them. She cocked her head to the side, her grin widening. "I have a gift, what can I say?" She sparred the teacup another glance, a look of utmost seriousness gracing her features.

"...Actually, I think you're going to be pelted by Chocolate coins."

"Somehow I would be perfectly fine with that," Ivan admitted with a foolish, awry grin on his face to counteract his positively serious one. "Though I'm not sure if chocolate coins will be enough to buy me a hot butterbeer this Friday when we go to Hogsmede."

He froze the moment her features relaxed. Then he ducked his face into his book before Emiliana could catch the blush crossing his cheekbones. "It's been getting chilly."

"Maybe you can try to trade some chocolate coins for it?" Emi suggested, laughing lightly. "Or I can buy you one before I head off with Jared, if you'd like. It's the least I can do for you putting up with me during our sessions." She rested her chin on top of her palm, lips once again forming a small smile as she stared at him.

She tapped her quill on top of his hand lightly. "I don't want you getting sick, you know. Otherwise, studying for Divination on my own will just be lonely and...not as fun."

"I'd have a better chance exchanging Wizard cards for a mug," he muttered into the pages, tapping at the new addition to his collection beaming up at him with a Jellyfish strapped to his head - Uric the Oddball, which he already had five of. He knew that it wasn't the limbs of the chocolate frog leaping inside of his stomach that made him sick, but rather the mentioning of Emi's current object of affection.

"I must be coming down with something is all..."

Noticing Ivan's sudden change in demeanor, Emi frowned, teeth worrying into her bottom lip as she placed her quill down. "Coming down with something?" She echoed, voice suddenly laced with concern as leaned over the small table between them to place her hand against his forehead.

"Do...do you want to call it a day so you can head to the infirmary?" She asked, absently attempting to smooth down his now mused bangs before pulling back completely.

He could feel his face heating the moment her hand touched his forehead; he was going to hospital wing for sure now. "No, no. I'm quite fine... I mean- I'll be fine...! Really... it's, ah, just a... maybe it's just a cold or something... or I didn't get enough sleep last night, that could be it, too..."

Way to be graceful, Ivan...

Frown deepening, Emi continued to stare at Ivan, expression unsure and eyes bright with concern. "Ivan, I'm not going to be upset if you, ah, want to end this now. If you're not feeling well, you should at least go and take a nap." She tugged at his sleeve lightly. "B-But, if you start to feel worse, just let me know and we'll stop."

"N-no! This is fine! I really, r-really need this practice! I need to get an O in Divination! I can't do this without your help," he bowed his head and stared down at the text that looked Greek to him. "I-I'll be fine."

"...are you sure?" Emi asked once more, her right hand now twiddling nervously with her quill. Another moment of silence passed before she finally sighed, giving in with a slight nod. "Fine, fine. B-But if you get sicker, don't blame it on me. And," She stopped to smile faintly. "I don't think you need me to come up with brilliant lies to use during class, Ivan."

Another sigh as she flipped through her text once more.

"Well. I...think we can move on to palmistry now. Shall I do you first or do you want to give it a go?"

"...I've heard that Divination has a lot to do with lying, but... for some reason I find the latter easier." He let his hand crawl across the table of its own accord for her to take. "Are you going to read my palm then? I really hope that it isn't on the OWLs..."

"Even so, we probably should be careful that we don't say that in front of the professor," Emi said with a small smile as she leaned forward, lightly smoothing Ivan's hand out. "I suppose I can start, then. And I can almost guarantee that we're going to be tested on this," she muttered, fingertip absently tracing one of the lines on his palm.

"I...think this is the heart line?" Emi asked, voice tinged with uncertainty as she raised her gaze back up to the blond in front of her.
