“What’s happened now?” Nick mumbles.
He looks exhausted.
“Nothing.” Tim forces a cheerful smile on his face and doesn’t tell Nick about the backbenchers arguing, not about how Ming is thinking about retiring or that Charlie wants to punch David in the face. It, he feels, won’t help. “Are you busy? Stupid question. We’re always busy. C’mon, we’re going for a drink.”
“We are?”
“We are.” Tim confirms with a nod.
So they’re in a bar. Pint of beer each. “You’ll be leader, one day.” Nick says with a weak smile. “Don’t do what I’ve done.”
“Shut up and drink your beer.” Tim orders.
“Yes dad.”
“Hush, you don’t want the Telegraph to think I give my kids alcohol now, do you?” The ginger man throws his arm casually across Nick’s shoulders. He feels the older stiffen and tense, and his heart bleeds. “Well, not pints.”
“Of course.” There’s a glimmer of a real smile on Nick’s face.
“Much better.” Tim nods at him. “If you don’t start smiling, you’ll go all wrinkly like David.”
“He’ll beat you up.” The smile is growing.
“And then I’ll get the sympathy vote. Sorted.” Tim gives another nod, firmer this time. “Now finish your beer. I have some videos of the kids to show you.”
“Is this the infamous nativity play?” Nick’s beer is disappearing quicker than Tim anticipated. This night might be more expensive than he planned.
“It is.” He confirms. “Now drink up.”
