"There, that should do," the make-up artist smiled politely at David.
"Uh, are you sure that's enough?" David asked, surprised that she had stopped when she had. Normally, his own make-up people were at it for quite a long time.
The woman looked upset at the suggestion, "Yes. We still want you to look like a male human being don't we? If I kept going you'd look like you were made of plastic, especially with that delicate skin you have."
David laughed good naturedly, slightly perturbed that apparently his make-up team might be painting his face a bit too much, "Right, well thank you, then!"
She smiled at him and nodded, glancing over at Nick as she left the room, "Mr Clegg, nice to meet you as well."
Nick smiled and said goodbye as she left, "So, David, how does it feel to not look airbrushed for once?"
David tried to look hurt at Nick's joke, but couldn't quite maintain the façade. He started to chuckle, "Like my skin can breathe."
Nick smirked at him and looked back down at the newspaper he was reading. Nick was stretched out across a couch that was pushed against the wall of the make-up room, legs propped up on the arm whilst his back was pressed into the back of the couch. It was an awkward position to look at, let alone to sit in, but David had watched Nick continually sit like that whenever they were in private for months, for more than a year in fact. Especially the last six months or so, as they had been working double time together because of the 'project'. The 'project' that had them where they were at the moment, in the make-up room of an American cable talk show.
"Are you ready for this?" David asked idly, not sure what quite to say. They had done an interview about the 'project' before, with Graham Norton because their PR teams decided that would get them the best reaction, but this one seemed different. Perhaps, he thought, it was because this interview was the only one they were doing in America and it was the only chance the two of them would have to pitch the 'project' to the American public. He felt that, if they didn't do a good job, then it would negatively affect the outcome of the 'project' in America.
Nick nodded once, not even looking up from his paper, "Don't tell me you're nervous about this."
David shrugged, "I'm not, mostly. I just want this to go well."
"So we can go home?" Nick joked.
"No," David rolled his eyes, "So it does well over here."
"David, don't worry so much," Nick put his paper down, "Remember, we're not the only ones promoting it."
David sighed, "I guess you're right. I'll relax."
Nick didn't acknowledge David, just went back to the paper. David stood up and walked over to the couch, plopping down next to Nick and reading over his shoulder. He leaned into the other man just ever so slightly and placed a light hand on his thigh in order to lean closer and read the tiny type printed on the page. Nick noticed, glancing over, and adjusted the newspaper between them so that they both could read with ease. They silently read together, Nick knowing on practised instinct when it was okay for him to turn the page. He knew that David read just a bit faster than him, but liked to go back and reread certain parts of every article to be sure that he understood completely. Nick was just turning the page, knowing David would have finished the final article just seconds ago, when one of the show's interns popped in, knocking at the wall next to the doorway.
"Um, Mr... Prime Minister, sir, and um... Deputy Prime Minister," The young man stuttered, and David almost wanted to laugh aloud at how the Americans never seemed to know how to properly address them. "Just letting you know that we'll be ready for you on set in about five minutes."
"Sure, thank you," Nick nodded warmly at him, in that 'yeah, I'm just another normal guy' kind of way that David had never quite mastered. The young man smiled and disappeared just as quickly as he had appeared.

Nick nodded, "Are you still nervous?"
"Not really," David smiled, delighted that Nick actually cared, "but you know how I get right before I have to talk in front of people."
Nick snorted, "Yeah, the opposite of stage fright. Confident as fuck."
David smiled and motioned for Nick to walk out the door before him. He wasn't nervous any more, but he was still concerned. This was important to him.

DCam's surprise at not having as long spent on his make-up made me laugh. Love the dynamics between Nick and David.
