I'm grateful for the comments :P Your challenge now is: seriously, which character/pairing deserves a break?

And George did try, for Nick's sake. He tried to find other things to occupy his mind - he even took a novel into the office with him to fill up those vacant moments when his imagination would usually drift to Peter. But surely, even if talking to the man was forbidden, thinking about him was still allowed?

What was George without Peter? Incomplete, utterly adrift. Without his memories of the older man running through his head day and night, his life felt aimless, without meaning. So George indulged himself. No matter how guilty he felt afterwards, he would always end up thinking about Peter: his smooth but savage put-downs, the way his eyes changed when he laughed.

Not seeing him was torture.

In the end, George didn't even call Peter. He was sitting up in his study, only five days after their last meeting, staring at his inbox and thinking about going to bed when suddenly the screen blipped. It had refreshed automatically and the number of 'new emails' had changed by one. Not unusual - there were a lot of people with valid reasons to email the Chancellor at twenty to midnight. Probably David reminding him to go to bed...

My dear Boy George. I would be happy to let you buy me a drink tomorrow. No, this will not be okay with A, but if it's okay with you then that's all that matters. Let me know when/where is convenient. Peter. x

A shudder ran through George. Peter wanted to see him! And, oh, did George ever want to see Peter. He knew it, with all the butterflies in his stomach, that they were made for each other, and it had been stupid to pretend otherwise. Peter's current relationship was wearing him down, breaking his heart every day. George chuckled at the image of himsellf atop a magnificent horse, charging in to rescue the older man from his dreadful master.

Huh. Yes, Alastair might be a small complication. He was bound to be angry when George rightfully took Peter for himself - anyone would be. Peter was worth hanging on to, after all.

Smart, capable and thoroughly fuckable: who could resist such a prize? George knew he'd be furious if he was in Alastair's shoes. Suddenly a wave of guilt rushed upon him as he considered how the other man would feel when he found out about their arrangement. Right there, in Peter's email. No, this will not be okay with A.

But the man was a would-be cheat, wasn't he? He didn't deserve Peter.

Then there was Nick's desperate plea that he should leave them both alone. Fuck Nick, thought George, gritting his teeth as he glared at the screen. What would he know? Just because Nick went around handing out his misplaced paternal instinct to any miserable psycho, that shouldn't mean George couldn't have a chance at a love life.

Yes. Clearly, George was the only sensible one involved. He was only going to help a political rival cheat on his jealous partner, snatch away the only thing standing between Alastair and total emotional collapse, and betray the trust of his best friend.

Already excited at the prospect, George quickly typed his reply and started getting ready for bed.
