it's pawpaw season!

Long-time readers may remember that when we first bought this house, one of the first things we did was plant a couple of pawpaw trees, because Andy and I had long been curious about this native American fruit that was supposedly delicious but never found in stores.

So we planted our tiny little twigs with a few leaves on them, and looked past them into the woods behind our house, and realized that like half of the understory was pawpaws.

That year there was fruit literally falling from the trees in our woods. Another grove near a popular hiking trail was so fragrant with fruit you could smell it before you could see it. We thought every fall would have this amazing bounty, but no: pawpaws have been few and far between since then.

Finally, we're having another good pawpaw year. I don't know if there's a lot of regional variation in how well they do or not -- maybe they're all on some kind of cycle? Anyway, if you live somewhere in the native range of the pawpaw, this weekend would be a good time to go poke around in some damp valley habitats and look for this unique wild food.
