I have something of a fondness for genderswitch fic, and I like historical AUs, too (which is one of the reasons I watch BBC Sherlock in the first place). But combining them both into one story seemed to me like it might push the text too far from the original for me to really click with it -- but luckily, I took a chance anyway, and it turned out AWESOME. I recommend to you How the mouth changes its shape, a BBC Sherlock story by
breathedout in which Sherlock and Johanna ("Johnnie") are young lesbians in 1950's London, embroiled in a murder investigation at the Gateways Club.

I can't personally speak to the historical accuracy, but breathedout is an obsessive researcher and many chapters are graced with endnotes. And the story is just so, so good, not just in the id-tastic button-pushing way of good fic, but also in the way of just plain good writing. It is still a WIP, but new chapters are being posted each Thursday, so I really can't see this one stalling out.

Many thanks to
sophiahelix for introducing me to this gem!
