For those who are curious (but not curious enough to be tracking the post), I have compiled a list of the recommendations people made (and have appended some commentary):

James Tiptree Jr. - short stories
Octavia Butler - Xenogenesis series
Rosemary Kirstein - Steerswoman series
Joan Slonczewski -- A Door Into Ocean
C.J. Cherryh - Cyteen, Forty Thousand In Gehenna, Foreigner series, "nearly anything with aliens"
Mary Caraker - Water Song
Vernor Vinge - A Fire Upon The Deep
Elizabeth Moon - Remnant Population
Jack Vance - Demon Prince series
Mary Doria Russell - The Sparrow & Children of God
Samuel R Delany - Stars in my Pocket Like Grains of Sand
China Mieville - Embassytown
Nalo Hopkinson - Midnight Robber
Ursula LeGuin - Hainish novels
David Brin - Uplift series and Glory Season
Julie Czerneda - Species Imperative series
Carla Speed McNeil - Finder series
Suzy McKee Charnas - The Vampire Tapestry
Joan D. Vinge
Phyllis Gotlieb - Flesh & Gold
Gwyneth Jones - White Queen
Nancy Kress - An Alien Light
Patricia McKillip - The Moon and the Face (second half of Firebird Moonflash)
Karen Joy Fowler - Sarah Canary
Janet Kagan - Hellspark
James Alan Gardner - Radiant
Robert Sawyer - Hominids

From this list, I've read: about half of the Tiptree story collection; MDR's The Sparrow; Cherryh's Forty Thousand In Gehenna, most of the Chanur series, and about half of Cyteen (I don't remember aliens?); LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness; Brin's Uplift series; and the first volume of Finder. Oh, and I remember loving Joan Vinge's Summerqueen back in college, but I don't remember if it had aliens? Also also, I've read Moon-Flash, but mine was a stand-alone; I didn't know it had a sequel, or that the sequel had aliens!

So there are many things here for me to read! Including quite a few which are actually in my personal library, but never read. I used to have organized books, until the flood last year. We worked frantically to save the books -- by the end Andy was slogging through filthy hip-deep water in his chest waders, with a flashlight, dumping books into a laundry basket and passing it up the stairs to me. Then I would dump the books on the living room floor and send the basket back down. We shifted over 1,500 books that night... the only one we lost was a Gene Wolfe, one part of the Book of the New Sun (can't remember which one). Anyway, they eventually got packed away in boxes, and we've been haphazardly unpacking them recently in our sunroom. Of the unread ones, I managed to find: the first Foreigner book; Kirstein's Outskirter's Secret (this series NEVER shows up used in the stores I go to -- I've been looking for book one for years); Kress's An Alien Light; Jones's White Queen; and I know that three of the later volumes of Finder are out there somewhere, but I still don't own volume two!

So I could start reading right this minute... but what I really want to do is buy Embassytown, the rest of the Steerswoman series (I did not know it had aliens! I thought it was fantasy!), and Finder volume two.
