Summary:

Jared sent out an email en mass to let everyone know he was home and that they were okay. ‘Going off the radar for a few days, we’ll call when we leave the bunker’, he told them.

They spent the rest of the day just being with each other in the quiet of their house on the hill. They sat on the couch long after the conversation had ended just touching each other, feeling skin and tears and lips and what Jensen was sure was the forever Jared was so certain of.

Around noon Jared brought Jensen back to the kitchen and made sure he ate lunch and took his meds. They sat at the table the way they used to always sit, Jensen’s legs thrown across Jared’s lap, close as they could be to one another.

The snow was thawing outside, so they bundled up and took the dogs out for a walk in the late afternoon light. They held hands while they strolled, Harley and Sadie walking at an easy pace, happy to have their daddies back the way they should be. It was taking what little energy Jen had right out of him so they kept it short, huddled close together, and made it back home so Jen could nap for awhile.

He woke up warm on the oversized couch, wrapped in the blanket from their bed. His little cacoon was so comfy and his arm barely hurt and he didn’t want to move. But suddenly Jared was there kissing his forehead and his cheeks and his closed eyes, coaxing the older man to come back to him.

"Get up baby", Jared sat on the floor next to Jensen’s head and ran his fingers through Jen’s dirty hair. "I made you dinner. Big noodles and meat sauce", he kissed Jens forehead again, "just the way you like it".

Jensen popped one eye open and gave Jared a quizzical look, like he was deciding whether or not to get up. "With bread?"

"A whole loaf buttered and baked", Jared smiled.

"Kay, I’m up". Jensen started to untangle himself from the blanket and let Jared help him up.

"I stink", he commented as they stood pressed together for a moment.

"S’okay. We can take care of that later". Jared pulled him by the arm toward the kitchen, "C’mon, foods gonna get cold".

In the kitchen the food was steaming on the table, one can of soda and one glass, and the chairs pushed together.

Jensen sat down and popped the top on the cola and poured it into the glass while Jared ran in circles.

"Country or emo shit?" he called from the living room.

Jen smiled, "Country…some older stuff…none of that hillbilly techno crap".

Jared put a few random CD’s in disc changer and sat with Jen at the table, legs twined together as they ate and listened to the music. They shared the soda and Jared couldn’t help smile. Jensen was a germaphobe, always afraid of what other people might have. He had a clear memory of the first time they shared. His glass was drained and Jen had held out his, half full of iced tea, and smiled at him simply saying, ‘you can drink from my glass’. It was one of those milestones in their relationship that no one else would ever understand.

They ate and drank and touched and kissed while George Straight and Kenny Chesney took turns crooning.

When the meal was done they worked together to clean the table and the dishes.

Jared was bent over the dishwasher, filling it with dirty plates, when he heard the song start. Suddenly Jensen was behind him pulling him away from the machine and into the middle of the room.

"Dance with me", he whispered.

There’s a place I’ve been looking for

That took me in and out of buildings

Behind windows walls and doors

And I thought I found it

A couple of times even settled down

And I’d hang around just long enough to find my way back out

Jared stepped into Jensen, and like a southern gentleman, offered his hand. Jensen took it and let himself be pulled in close, his arm trapped between them when Jared wrapped his other arm around his waist.

I know now

The place that I was trying to reach

Was you right here in front of me

They started that sway that’s not particularly pretty, but full of emotion and comfort. Slow left to right as they made circles in the kitchen. Jared couldn’t help but kiss Jen when those big green eyes looked up at him.

And I wouldn’t change a thing,

I’d walk right back through the rain

Back to every broken heart on the day that it was breaking

And I’d relive all the years

Be thankful for the tears

I cried with every stumbled step that led to you

And got me here

It’s amazing what I let my heart go through

to get me where it got me in this moment here with you

and It passed me by

God knows how many times

I was so caught up in holding what I never thought I’d find

I know now there’s a million roads I had to take

To get me in your arms this way

Jared mouthed the words and just stared at Jen who’d laid his body heavy on Jared’s chest.

Here

In a love I never thought I’d get to get to

Here

And if that’s the road god made me take to be with you

But when the whole thing slowed down and the piano kicked up, Jensen pulled back and started to turn them faster while he sang for Jared.

And I’d relive all the years

and be thankful for the tears

I cried with every stumbled step that led to you

And got me here

Right here.

The song slowed to a stop and Jared pressed his lips to Jensen’s before closing his eyes and resting their foreheads together. "I love you so much", he whispered. "I am so lucky you kept me all this time".

Jensen chuckled at the thought. All this time he’d figured he was the lucky one. Had to be. Jared had stepped in with his overbearing nature and floppy hair and fixed everything in Jen’s life that he didn’t know was broken.

"C’mon", Jen smiled and dragged him by the hand. "I need a bath".

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Jensen took Jared upstairs to their bathroom and showed him the trick Ali had taught him with saran wrap and waterproof medical tape. It would be a few more days before he could take the brace off of his arm, but this was fine for now.

They took their time, Jen stripping down to his underwear while Jared waited patiently. They turned the shower on and started wrapping Jen up with the plastic and sealing it with the waterproof tape.

"Can you do it by yourself, I mean do you need any help or anything?" Jared asked a little hesitantly.

"I’m fine, I mean, Ali didn’t get in here and bathe me the other night", Jen laughed a little then with honest eyes looked at Jared, "But I wouldn’t mind if you stayed in here while I scrubbed up".

"Of course. You feeling okay?" Jared was worried again, his new default setting.

"Yeah", Jensen shrugged and held his plastic clad arm away from his body. "I’m just tired. Been tired a lot lately".

Jared pulled Jensen close to him from where he sat on the commode, hands on the older man’s hips, "Your body’s zapped from trying to heal, that’s all". He moved quickly after that, turning Jen around and pulling his underwear down by the waistband to expose one bright white cheek, before slapping it. "Now shower so we can go to bed. A day of doing nothing has exhausted me". He grinned wide and held back a giggle.

Jensen followed directions, dropping trow and climbing in the shower. He hummed the tune from the kitchen while he got himself clean, scrubbing his hair with one hand and washing the ripe smell from his skin.

When he opened the shower door Jared was standing in his underwear holding out a towel. "You good?" he asked expectantly.

"Yeah, all clean", Jensen smiled wide and honest.

"Kay. I’m gonna jump in really quick while you get dressed. Is that okay?"

"Yeah, course", Jensen kissed him on the side of the neck when he took the towel and wrapped it around his waist. "I’m gonna let the dogs in and put a DVD on in the bedroom. Any requests?"

"Nothing either of are receiving royalties from and no shoot em’ ups either". He stepped out of his boxers and into the shower.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

When Jared got out of the shower he went to their bedroom to get dressed and found Jen Snuggled p on the bed watching Fox News.

"That what you wanna watch?" Jared asked, the sound of Texas curling around the ends of his words.

"Yup", Jen said watching him slip into a pair of bottoms. "C’mere tired boy".

Jared just melted into the bed next to Jen. "How you know I’m so tired?" He asked laying his head against Jen’s shoulder.

"I can hear it in your voice". He ran a hand through Jared’s soft wet hair and took a deep breath of the smell. "Now close your eyes and we’ll get some sleep".

Jared stiffened a little and turned to look at Jensen. "I don’t wanna sleep Jen. I just wanna…I wanna sit here and look at you and hold onto you".

"Well, I happen to know that you can hold onto me all night long and still sleep. I’ve experienced it". A soft kiss.

"I know, but…just let me sit here with you for awhile. Please?"

"What’s going on Jay?" Jensen was bothered by the strange insistence.

Jared took a deep breath and sat up, crossing his legs beneath himself. "We don’t know how long we have together, so I just want to spend as much of it as I can taking it all in".

Jensen shot up an eyebrow, thoroughly confused. "What are you talking about, baby?"

Jared sniffled a little. "When dad died no one expected it. Mom thought they still had time to grow old together, but they didn’t". He sighed and took Jen’s hand, "I just don’t want to wake up one day and realize that I missed something".

Jensen sat up and wrapped both arms around Jared. "I always wondered when you’d deal with your dad’s death. It only took three years".

"This isn’t about Dad", Jared told Jensen’s shoulder where his face was.

"You didn’t cry when he died, you never talked about it…I think that now that you and Sherry are okay that you’re gonna deal with this", Jen rubbed his back.

"I just don’t want to end up like they did", he paused for a moment. Maybe you’re right about daddy, I don’t…I don’t know".

"If you …." Jen started but Jared leaned back so he could look at Jen and all Jen could see in his fiancés eyes was pain and anguish.

"When Maggie called Friday morning to tell me about the accident, all I could think was that I was gonna lose you. Then I couldn’t help but think about Dad and how we never…", Jared’s breath caught and he started to really cry.

"Oh my baby", Jensen whispered as he pulled Jared to his chest and hugged him tight.

"I… I… I never got to work things out with him and I miss him so much and I thought that I might never see you again and we’d never get the chance to work things out either".

"I’m never gonna leave you Jay", Jensen whispered. "Lay down, c’mon". He gently pushed Jared and his heaving chest down against the pillows. "Take some deep breaths okay?"

Jared closed his eyes and nodded, breathing deeply as he could.

"He’s gone but you know he loved you Jay, even if he wasn’t comfortable with our lifestyle. You just have to focus on all the good things the two of you shared".

Jared was nodded his head slowly and rubbing his chest. Jen chuckled when he saw the action, pushing Jared’s hand away and rubbing the bare skin himself.

"When are you gonna stop torturing yourself baby? Just take some deep breaths and let your muscles relax. Deep breaths", he coached.

Jared was calming slowly, following Jen’s directions and focusing on the warmth of his hand.

"Can I tell you something", Jensen asked/

"’Course".

"I found the perfect place to get married. No drama, no fighting over dates…it’s perfect", Jensen beamed.

Jared looked at his big green eyes and the smile stretched across his face. "Where?"
