Thanks upon thanks to coffeejunkii,
outlawradio and
rhiannonhero for your sage input and thoughtful advice! And for your encouragement and inspiration. And general awesomeness.

This vid is dedicated to
outlawradio because she's right in the middle of doing the most amazing and intense creative work of all: having twins. I'm thinking of you!!

In some ways, this vid is a follow up to All Things Go (in its merger of Cas' voice and Sufjan's); in other ways I'd also consider it a partner vid to Nowhere to Stop (though not stylistically) as it follows Cas' impossible journey. But maybe it has most in common with He Will Chase You, not just in the use of Sufjan, but in the atmospheric use of outside source.

But then, in this case, the outside source is an inside source, if you consider that this vid is as much a Sufjan Stevens vid as it is a Supernatural vid. All of the outside imagery is from the stunning scrim/light show that was a key part of Sufjan's Age of Adz tour. I went to that concert so excited to see Sufjan live and to gain new insight into his music--I didn't expect to be swept up in this colorful whirlwind of chaotic spiritual symbolism influenced by the Prophet Royal Robertson and by Sufjan's own struggle for creative meaning (both of which he talks about so brilliantly/endearingly in this clip. You must click through! Plus, bonus wings!)

So aesthetically, the visual dimension of the Age of Adz concert was like a tectonic shift for me--hmm, except those happen slowly and this happened in an instant. So, bad metaphor. But you get the idea--I came out of that concert with my eyes open to a different landscape, and I heard the Age of Adz in a whole new realm. Vesuvius had always been (one of) my favorite song(s) [so hard to choose!] from that album. And it fit so well for Castiel's struggle with faith and belief and god--concerns that Castiel and Sufjan share and thus can help each other to express. In that light, I'm aiming for two (or three) way transformativity here: music + Supernatural imagery, + age of adz imagery = ?.
