candy everybody wants

I'm endlessly fascinated by people's relationships to mass media, how present it is in our lives, how it shapes our identities, etc. I have a lot of weird, funny anecdotes about this. Here's a list of movies I've seen on first dates:
1. Heavenly Creatures. Yes, we were melodramatic pretentious teenage lesbians, and it was awesome. It was only luck that prevented the tragic end.
2. Being John Malkovich. This movie is hard enough to follow when you're not smoochin'.
3. Patton. "Every living thing on earth dies alone:" hott. Humanities class film screenings underscored the narrative of me & B's early relationship. To be fair, there was also a tearful American Beauty that was even more formative.

Maybe I'm thinking about this because I just saw Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, which brought on a fit of fond nostalgia, an emotion I'm full of now that I'm over that last teenage flame. I swear, we really were that smart and intense. And also ridiculous. I was watching the scene where Michael Cera's slutty ex-girlfriend tries to win him back by dancing seductively in a parking lot, and I thought, "OK, this is a little over the top," and then I remembered that that happened to me. Only in a crowded restaurant. I'm sorry I bring that story up so much, but in a lifetime of absurdity, it still stands out. Good times, good times.
