I noticed the amount of good movies began to decrease right around the year 2004. Why. WHY. EDIT:// Actually upon further reflection, 2008 had some goodies :)
But I digress. Below are what I consider the 20 best movies of the decade. I'll try to include one film from every year but some years were better than others (2000 and 2001 for example kicked everyone's ass halfway to Tijuana but again I digress).
If you want to read all 20, click below but this is just a quick Top 5 of the best acting performances I've seen this decade:
5. Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
4. Guy Pearce in Memento
3. Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder
2. Adrian Brody in The Pianist
1. Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds
1.
2000 - Best in Show.
This film pretty much invented the mock-u-mentary (if you've seen Spinal Tap, also with many of the players in Christopher Guest films, you know what I'm talking about).
2.
2000 - Memento.
This script turned plot on its head with its use of backwards/forwards action. Beautifully done with color and black and white.
3.
2000 - O Brother Where Art Thou?
It's the Odyssey and it includes the line "We thought you was a toad."
4.
2000 - Requiem for a Dream
That music shall always send chills down my spine. And make me giggle. Heehee...heroine.
5.
2001 - Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring.
Come on.
6.
Shrek - 2001
Giving kids' movies a bit more edge one "ass" joke at a time. Thank you for turning Disney on its head.
7.
2002 - The Pianist.
If you think Schindler's List is a good movie, punch yourself really fucking hard in the face, watch The Pianist, then apologize.
8.
2002 - 28 Days Later
Reinventing the zombie genre and letting us know humans are almost worse. Thanks Cillian, Brendan, and company!
9.
2003 - The Triplets of Belleville
They eat frog popsicles.
10.
2003 - Kill Bill Vol. 1
Feminist action movies FTW.
11.
2004 - Napoleon Dynamite.
Making sure everyone knew how cool llamas were and in general bringing back dry, weird humor into American cinema. Thanks, Napoleon.
12.
2005 - The Passion of the Christ.
Just kidding. u suck lolzorz roflmao. Anyway.
12.
2005 - V for Vendetta
I'll be the first one to say it got really fuckin' corny in some parts but a) V is adorable and I want one b) who can argue that mask isn't iconic?
13.
2006 - The Departed
A mob movie about Boston. The Dropkick Murphys have never been the same.
14.
2007 - There Will Be Blood
It drinks your milkshake.
15.
2008 - The Dark Knight
The Joker. Period.
16.
2008 - WallE
It's oddly depressing but in an uplifting way. And it's the most romantic film of the decade.
17.
2008 - Tropic Thunder
Robert Downey Jr. you have erected many a college-boy phallus with your blackness.
18.
2008 - In Bruges
Question: What do you get when you murder a priest and a kid at the same time? Answer: Ray Feines being awesome, Colin Ferrel being bearable for the first time in his career, and Brendan Gleeson being loveable as always.
19.
2009 - Bruno
More culturally relevant than Borat in the sense that its humor and horror comes from the people he comes into contact with vs. what he does and says.
20.
2009 - Inglourious Basterds
HELLLLLLLZ YEAH!
