Friday recs post: a special kind of clarity
There is way less porn this week than usual.
Harry Potter fic
The Deeds and Sufferings of Light by Anonymous. Luna, Griphook, and Ollivander gen; ~3100 words; PG-13; discussion of torture. Summary: On the day the Golden Trio are captured and brought to Malfoy Manor, three individuals await their fate in the darkness of the Malfoy dungeon.
This is made up of three passages from the perspective of each of the silent prisoners under Malfoy Manor. They each come vividly to life -- Ollivander’s last line and Griphook’s observations about his name which humans can’t or won’t pronounce will stay with me -- and the ending is gorgeous, as Luna sees Harry and Ron.
Memo by kellychambliss. Dolores Umbridge gen; ~1900 words; Teen; discussion of torture. Summary: After she makes a surprise visit to Hogwarts, the Senior Undersecretary to the Minister and Head of the Muggle-born Registration Commission writes a report. Set during Deathly Hallows.
Another fic set during DH. Umbridge’s voice and comments are perfectly hideous.
A Week of Coming Out by
katmarajade. Ginny & her brothers gen; ~2300 words; Teen. Summary: Ginny finds the courage to come out to her brothers. Some are more understanding than others.
So this is not all sweetness and light but I finished it smiling. Charlie and George both react in charming ways, and Ron is bewildered but not unhappy, and Percy is just made of win and adorable. They (almost) all show Ginny love in their very different ways and I love the Ginny!voice of it all.
Looking Like Harry Potter by Anonymous. Harry/Draco; ~9500 words; Explicit. Summary: Some times after the war Harry has started to work as his own lookalike at birthday parties for children. His next appointment: Scorpius Malfoy's 7th birthday at Malfoy Manor, Wiltshire. Bugger.
I love the premise, and the whole thing is fluffy and cute and terribly charming. There’s some exposition (and typos) at the beginning but the whole thing is a perfect palate-cleanser if you just read the awesomely awful Umbridge fic above.

Under The Stars by 8c. Harry/Draco; PG.
This is so beautiful and atmospheric, and the two of them kissing in their school uniforms feels charmingly old-school to me.
Rooftops by dustmouth. Remus/Sirius; G. Summary: Remus and Sirius sit on a roof and don't say anything.
This is amazing. I love that there’s no dialogue, just bare thoughts in brackets, and how perfectly the greyscale, shadow and light, expresses the emotion and intensity and the feeling of the storm coming.
Buffy fic
someday i’ll be a real girl by kwritten. Buffy & Faith gen; ~2100 words; G; discussion of self-harm. Summary: Buffy tackles her depression through a series of phone calls to a crisis hotline, but finds that the only person she can really talk to is another Slayer. Buffy/Faith friendship. Some Slayer-angst (per request), but mostly a discussion of depression. This fic doesn't presume that Buffy's depression just disappears at the end of S6, but rather lingers with her through S7 and beyond.
This is GORGEOUS and full of perfect lines. The idea of Faith being the one who can understand (and a sort of confessor, held separate from Buffy’s daily life) is. FEELINGS. And there are some perfect little details, especially for Dawn and Joyce, even though they appear only v briefly.
Inherit by
storiesfortravellers. Buffy/Faith; ~1200 words; Mature. Summary: Buffy and Faith go on a road trip in Europe to take out a vamp syndicate. The fighting goes fine, but it's the moments in between the fights that are hard.
This is really wonderful (however ambiguous I feel about post-S7 Faith being willing to break a human’s arm for interrogation purposes). I love the premise -- that Faith dreams of Buffy’s life and death, as Buffy dreams of the Slayers before her -- and how the connection lingers after the nightmare is gone, and the last line is gorgeous.
Still Breathing by brutti_ma_buoni. Buffy/Kendra; ~400 words; PG-13. Summary: For Aaronlisa, who wanted season 2 slaying and Kendra alive.
Kendra survives Becoming and kills Angel herself, and then the two of them run together. They make an choice together and leave their old lives behind, and it is believable and lovely.
Hunger Games fic
i don't want anything in-between by paperclipbitch. Johanna/Enobaria; ~250 words; R.
Johanna = ♥ and this is tiny but incredibly vivid.
