Friday recs post: you're stronger than you look

Should’ve recced this earlier cos it makes me really happy!
alisanne wrote me Seeing Clearly, which is 200 fabulous words of Kingsley/Draco having Occulemency sex. Why isn’t there more Occlumency sex fic? THERE SHOULD BE MORE.

Harry Potter fic

Magic Tricks by talithan. Harry/Draco, ~5700 words, PG-13. Summary: When Draco agreed to accompany his flatmate to a Muggle magic show, he did not expect Harry Potter to be the magician onstage. Since then, nothing has gone according to plan.

This is lovely; the prose is a real pleasure to read, and Draco is charmingly clueless, and I like the boys finding each other again after they've both run from the wizarding world. I was very curious about why on earth DRACO would leave, but in the end I really liked the sketched-out reasons they give each other in the middle of everything else; there’s no long, angsty reveal of the deep-rooted reasons for leaving, just the amount they’re ready to tell each other. Also, here be lulz:

“I suppose I wanted to find myself,” Potter says thoughtfully, “or some cliché along those lines.”

“And you thought you might be hiding in a top hat?”

Some Luck Lies by fantasyfiend09. Harry/Draco, ~13 500 words, PG-13. Summary: Draco planned to go to the Auror Academy to get his man back. Draco may have changed since the war, but the success rate of his plans has not.

I stand by my generally :( response to fanfic-adaptations; my response to seeing stuff I like melded with other stuff I like is usually to run away, because the flattening out of the differences spoils things for me. But a LEGALLY BLONDE adaptation! The sources are so gloriously different and fun seemed inevitable, how could I resist?

And lo, it was much fun! This Harry is adorable and there are some great secondary characters. Draco’s finding of his own way after the war was great, and things didn’t happen because they happened that way in Legally Blonde. (Which I love, just fyi.) So yeah. My response was a :DDD

Harry Potter art

The Rug by sigune. Severus Snape, G.

I will give no more details because I swear it’s even funnier if you don’t know going in. This was posted at Christmas and I liked it and commented but didn’t rec. Which was silly in retrospect because I still go back to it for lulz. HILARIOUS.

Seeking Comfort by sugareey. Harry/Draco, PG-13. Summary: Harry is feeling a bit overwhelmed. So, he goes on an adventure to get away from everything, only to pay a visit to his favourite person.

SO CUTE. I really love sugareey’s art style, and the transformation panels here are especially well-done - I love Harry’s silhouette.

Hunger Games vids

Boy with the Bubblegun by
bironic. Katniss gen. Summary: The leaders of the Capitol think there's nothing to fear from a rural girl with a bow and arrow. Katniss makes them think again.

This is UTTER GENIUS. The song is perfection. It was made for the “gender and technology” theme for Wiscon 2013, and it gets into the class elements of The Hunger Games and the technological differences so well. Plus it’s just a really excellent encapsulation of so many of the themes of the whole trilogy using (obviously) only the first film - “gotta get a bigger picture/ so forgive me, forgive me” and the way the system tries to turn them against each other but Katniss remembers who the real enemy is, how the Tributes are victims and murderers, omg, I teared up. And the final sequence of shots. KATNISS HOW SO FABULOUS.

Perfect Day by pinkfinity. Summary: The Capitol wants you to see Katniss/Peeta. So does Peeta.

This is a brilliant idea: The Hunger Games tells us that during the final interview with the winner, a Highlights reel of the Games is shown. This is a trailer for the Highlights reel, so it’s about Katniss and her supposed love story, with a chirpy perky song over the deaths and injuries and misery. It’s chilling and fantastic, not least because I kept finding myself almost being drawn in by the happy music and the editing, and then thrown back out again by the actual horror of it.

Sherlock fic

I Got Bones Beneath My Skin by Snow. Sherlock/John, ~3400 words, Teen. Summary: Sherlock’s been wanting someone to put together the pieces. For a ‘John meets Sherlock’s ex who was abusive/encouraged the addiction/was generally not nice.

I enjoyed this a lot; it struck me as both very Sherlock in its fucked-upness and quite meta - the other POV on a particular subgenre of hurt/comfort, those fics that start with all the clues John doesn't pick up until he realises and is horrified. Lovely ending too!

Take It With You When You Go by azure_horizon. Sherlock/John, ~2000 words, Teen. Summary: When John leaves, Sherlock forgets which language he's supposed to speak.

Really loved this. Considering the asymmetry of Sherlock and John’s relationship, but the way it is still this deep vital foregone-conclusion of a thing, there’s something very satisfying about a fic where it’s messy and imperfect and John marries someone else and they still end up living together while Sherlock keeps bees, because even when it’s fucked up they are Holmes and Watson and they love each other.

The Moon, the Sun, and the Truth by
entrenous88. John/Sherlock/Greg in all combinations, ~9300 words, Explicit; underage (not in the UK, but yeah). Summary: John Watson tells himself he isn't dating Greg Lestrade. Yeah, they snog and grope and spend time together, but they're just mates. Then along comes Sherlock Holmes, who's far too good at figuring out the truth.

Generally I avoid any sort of uni AU like the plague but I took a chance on this one cos of the author. It was great -- very real John voice, a completely lovely Greg, and Sherlock being Sherlock. Especially him going all "I am practically seventeen!" with that teenage outrage. Also John <333
