"Friday" recs post: trusting him to get us where we're going

Aug 05, 2013 13:48

It is a million years since I did one of these, and consequently the recs are all a million years old. But! Pray indulge me while I catch up; even if you did see these first time round, these are all worth a second look.

Harry Potter fic

A Portrait of the Artist Undone by mypetelephant. Harry/Draco, Theo/Draco, Harry/Theo; NC-17; 3800 words; character death. Summary: “To influence a person is to give him one's own soul.”-The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Adaptations of other stories for fanfic are not my favourite thing, which has given me a bit of a sad as regards bottom_draco’s fest theme. This, though, is fantastic. A perfectly dandified, wicked voice throughout providing brilliant lines, dark comedy despite the pain Draco and Harry are in, a great twist and a stark ending. Sharp and tragic and a huge relief considering the utter disaster this adaptation could have been!

The March Potion by frayach. Past Harry/Draco, ~1300 words. Summary: They say time heals all wounds. They are wrong. (On AO3.)

I reread this while having a bit of a struggle with the black dog. I couldn’t believe how tiny it was, for something so powerful and real and affecting. It’s so tragic and mirrors so strongly my experience of (mild) depression and the shock of the last line has stayed with me for years.

Risk, The Unexpected by rons_pidwidgeon. Ron/Draco/Harry; NC-17; ~3800 words; double-penetration, light bondage, spanking, dirty talk. Summary: If Ron had known how their night out with the mates would end, he probably would have dressed better.

YAY! They’re my OT3, at least as long as the sex lasts, and this one starts from a Ron/Draco established relationship which is even better. (I love H/D, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nice for Ron to be the boyfriend instead of the special guest.) The emotional arc is very rushed - we go from Ron thinking Harry is straight to ‘yay, let us be a menage-a-trois!’ in a few hours - but the sex is hot and I like the appreciably different dynamics between the three of them.

Memory Alley by arsenicjade. Ron/Draco; R; ~2000 words; graphic discussion of past rape. Summary: Sending his oldest off to school brings up memories Draco would prefer to forget.

How much did I squee when I saw this on my flist? SO MUCH. It’s a snippet of Origins! The Origins trilogy is really beautiful Ron/Draco (and also Severus/Hermione, I understand, but I didn’t read their fic, which is the middle one.) It’s hurt/comfort and although the comfort is deep and lovely and involves all these community connections because arsenic is fabulous like that, the hurt is savage and long-lasting. So seeing them years on, having fostered and eventually adopted kids and still hit by the past but surviving and going on and happy... I am all verklempt.

Thor art

Second Son To A King by johanirae. Thor & Loki, G. Summary: What is left for the second son of an Asgardian king, once his brother ascends to the throne?

This is set immediately pre-Thor - a very well-done comic, sympathetic to both brothers. The use of colour is really nice - there’s a very dramatic shift from peachy background to deep blue at one point, and even though Loki barely moves between the panels it’s immediately like CRAP. WAY TO START WITH THE TERRIBLE DECISIONS, LOKI.

Great Warriors by
ani_bester. Thor and Loki, G. Summary: Thor and Loki-as kids- playing in some old ruins.

HOW ADORABLE ARE THEY? ALL THE ADORABLE. And so happy together, playing with sticks instead of mighty weapons.

Thor/Loki art by wantstobelieve. Thor/Loki, G yet full of sexy implications. Summary: “Tell me again how you persuaded me...

Incredibly technically accomplished and SO HOT. Thor so golden and muscled and his arm over Loki, their eye contact, and I am in love with the line of Loki’s throat.

Avengers fic

Kiss And Tell by Not_You. Avengers gen with mentions of Steve/USO girls; ~2100 words; R; mentions of bondage, exhibitionism/voyeurism and vaginal fisting. Summary: Steve's time in the USO served him well, and he is only the most technical of virgins.

Steve, Thor, Tony, and Clint hang out getting drunk on Asgardian mead and Steve talks about all the Not Sex (totally sex) stuff he did with the USO girls. It is weirdly, enormously charming.

Doctor Who fic

Detectives, Adventurers and Girls Who Don't Wait Around: The Paradox of Amelia J. Williams by
lizbee. Doctor Who gen all about Amy but featuring various companions; G; ~2000 words. Summary: Between her debut in 1938 and her death in 1993, Amelia Williams probably wrote over five hundred novels, short stories and articles.

This was written back in October and is now gloriously canon, as well as just glorious. It’s the foreword to a 2012 edition of an Amelia Williams book, interspersed with illustrations and companions finding these books, and it is the most delightful thing ever. There are a million clever little details in this history of Amelia Williams’ writing career, clever and funny and sometimes heartbreaking. And wait til you reach the sign-off at the end.
