Hello Internet?
I've been having ongoing difficulties installing Eset
Internet Security on my Win10 laptop, likely because I've
hardened it following some of these instructions (and the
installer doesn't play nicely with a hardened Windows):
https://www.hardenwindows10forsecurity.com Previously I've tried both the offline and online
installers (in that order) but couldn't even make it to the
language selection screen (you should have records of Eset
support helping me with this). I DID make it past the language
selection when I tried with the msi installer you provided, but
hit a roadblock when the installer complained about being unable
to write to a registry key (something to the effect of "Could not
write value ProductACode to key \Software\ESET\ESET
Security\CurrentVersion\Info.". I got past that error (I think)
by manually editing a registry entry as suggested at
https://forum.eset.com/topic/13565-v11-msi-silent-install-fails/?do=findComment&comment=69173 .
Now I have a new problem. During the install I get the
error "Service 'Eset Service' (ekrn) could not be installed.
Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system
services."* After googling I found some advice and followed the
following instructions:
Run gpedit.msc.
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies >User Rights Assignment.
In the details pane, double-click Log on as a service.
Click Add User or Group… and add the account to the list of accounts that have the Log on as a service right.
Once you have selected the user, click OK.
Click OK and close the policy editor.
Thaaaaat didn't fix the problem (but I can verify that
user account I am using does have permission to "log on as a
service"). Yes, I am attempting the install from an admin
account. FYI I'm not the only one to run into this problem (cf.
https://forum.eset.com/topic/25785-internet-security-installation-fails/)
but I haven't found a solution so I'm turning to you for help.
