Help me, lazywebs! I'm building a new computer, but having never built from scratch before, I'm not sure about components. Please, those with such techie experience, to be reading and commenting?

(People who've helped in the past: please re-read. I'm an idiot and forgot to write down the build I had before eBuyer deleted the list, and I honestly ( Read more... )

Although I've had excellent experience from ebuyer recently for individual items, I'm a little wary of their pricing, as it's not always great.

I bought a full computer upgrade a few months ago, and will highly recommend Aria.co.uk. Also worth checking out the special-price deals on there, as they tend to get you stuff a lot cheaper. Scan.co.uk also has something to say for itself, having some good deals.

For a monitor though I will turn you away from your choice, and direct you to the BenQ G2220HD (or the slightly cheaper HDA version which only has VGA, rather than DVI-D connector), which should be about the same price, but I can vouch for it being the absolute bee's knees for that price.

Re: CPUs. Since you're getting AMD, I can't really comment, but the latest Intel chipsets are relatively cool-running and the box fan does a most excellent job of cooling. AMD processors tend to have enormously enormous heatsinks, which makes me think that they are juicing theirs to the max of the hot and may benefit from a better fan.

Re: Graphics. Though ASUS have been doing less well on the motherboard market, their quality really not living up to their fame, their builds of both ATI and nVidia graphics cards remain top notch. If you can spare the extra little bit of moneys, then I'd go for an ASUS treatment.

I'll take a look at Aria and Scan, then. I had a quick compare against Maplin and Dabs, and Ebuyer was beating those hands-down.

The BenQ is very slightly more expensive; I picked the Samsung on the grounds, primarily, of its resolution, but I'll take your advice on the topic :)

On the graphics, when I looked for ASUS models, everything seemed to be on pre-order only; Scan, however, has this, which appears to be a similar model to what I was going to buy, but cheaper :D
