An Analysis of the Sidekick III Product Roadmap - Part Two
Sidekick 3 News
MoHan for the sidekick?Welcome to the second part of our two part analysis of the Sidekick III roadmap. This article goes over each item on the alleged leaked roadmap for the SK3.
Don't forget that this roadmap believed to be but not proven to be real, though all recent news from T-Mobile indicates that the timeline is realistic and matches with corporate goals regarding their 3g network. See part one for a full explanation.
This is a long article, so here are the highlights:
* First version of the Sidekick III released in Q2 2006, (between April and June)
* Second version will feature UMA Connectivity
* Sidekick 3 Limited Editions Released in Q3
* Sidekick 3 RAZR edition with Video in 2007
You may want to open a window of the leaked Sidekick 3 roadmap in order to follow along with this article.
Version 1: Sidekick III Mp3, Music
sk3 roadmap AThe first icon viewable on the leaked roadmap for the Sidekick III is in the second quarter (Q2) of 2006. In the box below the icon it says "Sidekick III MUSIC". Thanks to the massive success of the ipod, there is a huge demand for mp3 capability all next-generation mobile devices.
It makes sense that T-Mobile's first marketing campaign for the SK3 will be to show consumers how it is different than the SK2. An emphasis on playing mp3s would be a popular change.
It's worth noting that the target date of release for the Sidekick was April 2006. A rumor circulating in the Sidekick community is that the release of the product was pushed back to incorporate Bluetooth technology. All indications point the second quarter of 2006, which means the Sidekick 3 will be released sometime between April and the end of June.
sk3 roadmap BVersion 2: Sidekick III Music + UMA
The roadmap continues to a pair of devices, the top featuring "Music + UMA." There seems to be a lot of confusion about the what UMA is and how the Sidekick III will be using it.
UMA stands for Unlicensed Mobile Access. Basically, UMA is a way for mobile devices like the SK3 to be connected to the internet as often as possible at the greatest speed possible. So if you're at a T-Mobile HotSpot at Starbucks, you'll get wi-fi speeds on your Sidekick III. If you're out in the country in Tennessee, you'll have to rely on an "outdoor" network. An outdoor network might be cellular or EDGE. The point is that you don't notice the transition as your SK3 connects to from one service to another, it just works.
The reason UMA is important is that the ultimate goal of a seamless network connection is to allow telephone calls to be routed over wireless networks. This means that you can make voice over IP phone calls without the use of a cellular network.
Version 3: Sidekick 3 Limited Editions
Below the icon of the Music + UMA Sidekick III is an icon for the Sidekick III Limited Editions." This implies that there will be a number of limited run, and that there will be more than one version. The Sidekick II had two limited edition models, the Juicy Couture and the "Mr. Cartoon" edition. Judging by the success of the first Juicy version it seems likely that branding will be repeated for the SK3.
Given that the timeline arrow for the Sidekick III Limited Edition ends around the beginning of Q2, it appears they'll sell that until the limited production runs out.
Version 4: Sidekick NG - RAZR + Music + Video + UMA
sk3 roadmap CThe final fully pictured item on the Sidekick 3 roadmap is something called the Sidekick NG. The addition of the word RAZR on there is cause for some questions. The RAZR brand is owned by Motorolla. From the leaked pictures of the SK3, it will be produced by Sharp. The only way that this would work would be if Danger, Inc. decided to switch manufacturers during the life of the product.
Supposing this is a legitimate roadmap, the introduction of video is on track with T-Mobile's company goals for providing high-speed access in Q2 2007. For more information check our article about video on the SK3, see our article about it.
A Cheap Version of the Sidekick 3?
The final icon on the leaked roadmap is partially out of the picture, but depicts a cheaper version of the Sidekick, only $199. The release date above the icon is September 2007.
Pricing
Pricing on the device is listed above each of the icons, starting with an introductory price of $299 which holds through the release of each new device up through 2007. The Sidekick 3 Limited edition which appears to be black is priced at $399. Given that the timeline arrow for the Sidekick III Limited Edition ends around the beginning of Q2, it appears they'll sell that until the limited production runs out.
Conclusion
As we previously mentioned discussion of this roadmap has been banned from the official hiptop forums, whereas countless fake pictures of the sk3 have been allowed to be debunked.
If this roadmap is a fake, it is an incredibly well thought out forgery. The only funny addition is the introduction of a RAZR version. People are reporting that T-Mobile dealers across the United States have dwindling stock of Sidekick II's. Given that that the timeline, pricing, and feature sets all make sense we conclude that this is a real leak of the official roadmap for the Sidekick 3.
also SK3 has been shown on FCC site and is being approved and new pics below with info
As soon as a Sharp-made handset shows up on the FCC with a whole bunch of confidentiality-request paperwork affixed, you know it's gonna be good. Sidekick fans, feast your eyes on the real deal up in the grill (yep, all those pics were legit), and the um, naked, battery-less tail end of the Sidekick III (model PV200). Can't be long now, can it? And yes, this confirms pretty much much of the info we'd already heard about the forthcoming device: 1.3 megapixel camera, expandable memory (miniSD), and Bluetooth.
