Becoming the new Leader

Jan 13, 2008 01:32

Laurian stood in front of her room, waiting for the big ceremony that would take place that day, followed by an even bigger party in the evening. She felt restless, even a bit nervous. She knew today would be a big day for everyone at her Order. Not only would she turn 21 years old, which in itself was considered important here, but would she ( Read more... )

It was a bittersweet day to say the least. Rei knew that this was Laurian's responsibility, her duty, but that still did not make things any easier. After today...when she went back to St. Catherine's, it would be by herself. Laurian would now rejoin the rest of her people at the Lenihan Order as it's new Leader, the first in over two decades ( ... )

Laurian could feel Rei approaching and before there was a knock on the door, she said 'Come in' in a soft, but clear voice. She drew in a deep breath to push all the gloomy thoughts and nervousness aside. This wouldn't be a very joyous day for either of them and she wasn't going to make things even more difficult for Rei.

She turned around with a slightly forced smile on her face, though it soon became genuine when Rei's outfit pleasantly surprised her. "You look beautiful," Laurian said as she walked closer to her girlfriend. "Red looks good on you."

"Red's kind of my color," the princess subtly teased. "I've been wearing it for years."

Rei wore a smile similar to Laurian's, pushing aside her own brooding nature to appear cheerful and supportive for her girlfriend. "Today is your big day," she simply stated, not wanting to draw too much importance to the things Laurian was already dreading. Certainly a countless number of ladies-in-waiting had already filled her mind with every detail of the upcoming ceremony and all the things that would be required of her, if Christmas was any indication. "Before everyone else burdens you with their own demands," she continued, "I wanted to slip in and wish you a happy birthday."

"Thank you," Laurian said, though her forced smile began to waver. She hid that in Rei's black hair. She didn't want to appear weak or whiny, especially not on this day or in front of her girlfriend.

"I'd almost forget about that with all the fuss everyone makes," she then added in a soft voice. Although she had been pretty much alone on this day so far, people had constantly come to her for small things, minor details, everything that needed her attention. She assumed things would get only worse after today. What if she would hardly have any time to see her girlfriend?

"I love you, Rei," Laurian blurted out. "I know I don't say it often and... that I have a hard time showing it. But I really love you, Rei. You do know that, right?"

"I'm not going to forget," Rei softly whispered to her. "Everyone else might be more concerned about other things, but to me you'll always come first."

It wasn't like Laurian to blurt things out...it wasn't like her to show a lot of emotion at all, really, as she had just confessed. With this sudden confession and need for reassurance Rei felt that she had been right assuming Laurian could use someone to talk to right about now.

Rei encircled Laurian's waist with her arms in a loose embrace. "I know," she Seer replied. "But I still like to hear you say that."

A small smile appeared on her face and Laurian held Rei even tighter, though she was careful not to hurt her girlfriend. She took in a deep breath, smelled that wonderful scent of Rei's hair and felt a bit calmer.

"I'm scared," she then confessed. "I... I feel I'm not ready for this yet. I'm scared that I won't have time for you anymore. And I don't want that. You mean a lot to me, Rei." She closed her eyes. "If it's up to me, you'll always come first. I really hope my duties won't consume all of my time."

"Of course you're ready," Rei said to reassure her girlfriend's doubts. "You've been training for this day your entire life." Teasing a bit, she added "Sometimes perhaps too much ( ... )

A small smile appeared on Laurian's face. "I won't let you leave my side tonight at the celebration either. I don't care what other people want from me, I'm going to spend the whole night with you. They can have me later."

Her gaze then rose and fixed itself upon the door. "It won't take long before they'll come to get me. You should probably go to the chapel." Laurian looked back down at her girlfriend and placed the palm of her hand against Rei's cheek. "You know where that is, right? I can ask for someone to guide you to the chapel if you don't. I'll be there in a short while as well."

"I wouldn't leave your side for anything in this world."

Despite her reply and her promise, Rei knew that for now she would have to go, to give the new Leader time to make her final preparations. Her eyes traveled to the doorway and then back to her lover. "I believe I remember the way," Rei said after a slight moment of hesitation; if not, she could always allow her intuition to guide her.

A slightly pained expression did cross her face for a moment, however. She did not want to further add to the Slayer's doubts and insecurities by asking if she would be all right, but neither did she really want to leave her to turn and walk away. "I guess I'll be going," she finally said, briefly touching her hand to Laurian's. With a slightly forced smile she then added, "I'll be waiting for you there."

"I'll be seeing you there." She watched Rei leave and let go of a deep sigh once the door was closed. The moment where she had to accept her birthright was drawing near. Laurian checked herself one more time in the mirror. Instead of her usual 'gangster' look, which was simple and comfortable, she now looked almost like a true knight. Her armour had been polished and the clothes she wore today had been reserved for this occasion. She looked... knightly. Like a true paladin of the Order, fit to lead armies to war ( ... )

((OOC: Probably translating. Gives Rei a chance to interact with someone when she would otherwise be sitting and watching silently. Plus, if we make translation spells too common then it'd take away from stories like Akiko or Robin, etc.))Rei took her seat in the chapel, not fully knowing what to expect. The psychic seemed a little more distant than usual, but as an outsider to the Order and their ways it may not have been obvious to anyone other than herself. Quietly she sat down and folded her hands into her lap as she waited for the ceremony to begin. There was a polite smile as McGaffen sat beside her, but shortly thereafter she was lost in thought once again ( ... )

"Ladies and gentlemen, my brothers and sisters," Lord Mulligan addressed his audience. "We have gathered today for a special occasion. Twentyone years ago, on this day a child was born; a very special child. A child of which we all knew would be our next Leader one day. That day has finally come ( ... )
