Becoming the new Leader

Laurian stood in front of her room, waiting for the big ceremony that would take place that day, followed by an even bigger party in the evening. She felt restless, even a bit nervous. "Ladies and gentlemen, my brothers and sisters," Lord Mulligan addressed his audience. "We have gathered today for a special occasion. Twentyone years ago, on this day a child was born; a very special child. A child of which we all knew would be our next Leader one day. That day has finally come."

His deep, rich voice went on and on, though Laurian barely listened. All her thoughts were now back with Rei, who sat not far away from her. Today would be the end of the time they had together at St. Catherine's. Time together would get scarce, and she had no idea if keeping this relationship going would be the right thing to do. Though Laurian knew she would no longer manage it without Rei.

Her mind suddenly came to attention with the elder Slayer's speech came to an end. A very important moment was about to come and every part of her body prepared for it. Though nothing could really prepare her for what was about to come.

"We have awaited this day breathlessly," Lord Mulligan concluded his speech. "The time has come. Rise, Loaghaire, and accept what rightfully belongs to you." Laurian rose at the command and the old man held out the claymore she'd had in her possession the past two years. It still appeared different somehow, though this was not the time to think about it. It was no time for thinking at all. Her body moved before she knew it, firmly grasping the hilt of the sword. For a moment, she stood like that. Then she turned to face the audience - her people - and lifted it high up in the air for everyone to see.

And froze. Her eyes widened slightly and she could not move her body at all, although it was hard to see for the audience. A force of memories going back to the very first Leader hit her suddenly. She shared it all; the memories of those who had been Leader before her. The battles, the decisions, the mistakes and the wisdom. And she knew that from this moment on, her battles, decision, mistakes and good deeds would be recorded as well and passed on to those who would follow her.
