So my current desktop for home may be close to dead. I rescued the hard drive and all the data. It's possible that machine is recoverable but... It might be time to just get a new computer anyway. Any recommendations?
My old machine is a Dell Dimension 2400 first bought in 2004 (I think) though I didn't start to use it until 2005 when I inherited it. I reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP and have been using that install since. It has only a 40 GB drive, 640 MB of RAM, and not sure the proc off the top of my head.
Last week it started to freeze up; not just sluggish but entirely unresponsive. It wasn't consistent but would do it within moments after every restart, sometimes before the Microsoft Windows logo got off the screen. Even in safe mode. I first went to get the data off the drive (which proved successful) and haven't had a chance to toss the drive back in and try restarting it yet.
But... it might be time to get a new 'puter anyway. I need to decide soon so it arrives before Pennsic (since it's the only working computer in my house). CWRU has a discount with Dell which has a good warranty plan. I don't necessarily need a high profile machine since I can use machines on campus for most of my video and photo editing. Do I buy online or shop around at stores like Mircocenter?
Money is of course an option but I am flexible; I could go inexpensive and get a simple system but if I find something I like that's worth the cost I could go much higher.
Let the suggestions begin! :D
