They were more than a world apart, two sides of a thick dark line - no side any shinier than the other when you look close, but her side 'least they got pretty uniforms and enough of a wage to look out for them and theirs, his side 'least he's got his freedom.

Doesn't make a lick of difference when they're both here locked in the hold of a wreck of a ship as the real bad guys - the ones who don't respect freedom or a pretty uniform - make off with Serenity and the gorram Police cruiser that Beckett had been chasin' her in.

Mal forced a grin, turning the wattage up to compensate for the fixed glower Beckett seems determined not to let go of.

"So... Detective..." He cringed a little as the glower gets turned on him, somehow even more powerful with a target. "Read any good books lately?"

It's a phenomenal coincidence, one they hadn't even realised until after the initial flare of lust and the excitement of meeting another time traveller, followed by the sheer joy of uninhibited sex the like of which this century won't see again.

When they'd finally realised who they both were, who they had been, and how they were connected, the celebration of 'right time, right place' had led to a whole new level of intimacy.

They talked later - her fingers tracing slow patterns in the sweat on his skin and his hand rubbing gentle circles at the base of her spine - about a magical mythical wonderful man who travels through time and space with a mastery no-one could hope to match. They talked about how they loved him and missed him and desperately wished they might know he was alright. When they parted ways it was with a time and date and place that they would meet next - whenever they next needed it - and the knowledge that whether he needed it or not, the doctor had people - had FAMILY - looking out for him. Throughout time and space.

It had started as mild concern, but really there were plenty of other things going on that had demanded Sophie's attention, not even considering the ever developing plans to free Nate from prison. It didn't register as anything more than that until they finished up a con in Minnesota and spent a night in a motel, all four of them in two tiny rooms. Sophie had arrived back at the motel last, having finished up with the client, and found Eliot stood in the middle of their shared room, wavering on his feet like he was about to collapse.

Perhaps she'd been ignoring him on purpose. Things had been awkward since she'd returned, and they hadn't managed to fall into that easy comfortable space they'd shared before she'd left. It had been easier to pretend they'd never been an item, never relied on each other for comfort and protection. Now, though, she couldn't ignore the dark smudges under his eyes, the deep lines of exhaustion and... yes, pain. She wanted to, now more than ever, but she couldn't.

"What can I do?" she asked, keeping her voice soft and low, touching his arm to tie her voice to her physical presence. Remind him she was right there, and strong enough to take his burden if he needed her to.

Eliot looked through her for a moment, before focusing on her face, and Sophie wondered if the only thing keeping him on his feet was his need to hide his vulnerability from her. She'd withdrawn her protection - and she was ever more sure that Nate hadn't stepped in to fill the space while she had been gone - and now Eliot wasn't going to let himself appear weak in front of her.

"I'm alright, Sophie." Eliot smiled in an absent way. "I'm jus' gonna wander around a bit, then I'll get some sleep," he wavered again, as if he was thinking of moving towards the door but couldn't persuade his feet to move. Sophie didn't need to have shared his bed for the last few months to know he'd barely slept at all since Nate had been taken. She knew the signs well enough, and as much as these things with Eliot usually settled themselves once the cause was removed, there was no way Eliot was going to survive as long as it took to get Nate back without sleep.

She firmed up her grip on his arm, making it supportive, adding a little extra force into her words when she said, "You're going to go to bed now." There was nothing subtle about it, and no real trickery other than taking advantage of Eliot's subconscious desire to follow orders.

Eliot sighed, "I'm pretty damn tired," he agreed, as if he'd made the suggestion himself.

He let himself be led to Sophie's bed, let Sophie help him out of his boots and his coat, but pulled away when Sophie reached for his shirt. He cleared his throat uncomfortably and shifted on his feet for a minute before heading towards the other bed and dropping bonelessly into it, fully clothed. He was snoring minutes later.

Sophie watched him sleep for a little while, feeling the dark pit in her stomach that had been there since Tara had phoned her to ask her to come home, churn unhappily. This would work when Eliot was on the edge, truly exhausted, but she needed something that would be more effective with him the rest of the time. He needed more sleep, and he wasn't a man to take suggestion lightly.

When she got home, it was time for some research. If brainwashing was what it took... well, maybe Eliot would thank her later.

She knows why she's drawn to him. Just like she knows why she fell in with these guys despite their history with her family. Just like she knows what will happen when this all falls apart.

They know who she is now. What she is. Who she's related to. They even know what she plans to do to their boss once this is done. But they keep her nearby, they treat her like an asset not a threat, she'd even go so far as to say they treat her kindly, in their own rough and ill-mannered way. She's not insulted, mostly she's just confused.

And then there's Cougar. There's a silent menace there, an unvoiced threat. His shooting, long distance and short, is enough to take her breath away from time to time, and the feeling of his eyes on the back of her neck when they work under the protection of his scope is as thrilling as it is terrifying. One step out of place, one move against their boss' life, and she'll be dead before she's realised he's pulled the trigger. And yet he's gentle with her, tender, and when his dreams bring him awake with a scream, he seems so truly vulnerable that she can't believe he was ever a threat to her.

Oh yes. She knows why she's drawn to him. And she wouldn't have it any other way.

You and your father love (hate) what each of you represent (life war comfort war protection war). But you've got your freedom now (trapped under me like an insect, squirmy) and you love it (and me).

You don't see much, do you? Just the inside of your head and the outside of your eyes, and you don't look further than you have to (pretty poor explorer) because you see war everywhere (everywhen, and doesn't that just tickle your giggle centre). You don't see me. Not me. Just my... girl. That part of me.

Sometimes you look like you might be thinking about looking deeper (that twitchy grin, corner of your mouth, serious eyes) and then you remember you and your father, a gun in his hands. You and your father hate (love) what each of you represent. I remember my father like that. Sometimes.

I try... (squirly, it's so hard to focus sometimes) I try to show you my inside-me. The not-girl monster-fighter-me. I think you might like her (me). But then you smile - your girl smile, like you might be a child really, only months old like your mind is with everything in it all war war war, and it's hard to focus sometimes. So I treasure your girl-body like it's not a baby, remind you what it's like outside your head and hopefully one day you'll be whole enough to see inside of me.
