Thanks to one of those lovely little MIT traditions, I can now finally say with some confidence that using a particle accelerator to learn about the elementary constituents of matter is probably not all that similar after all to learning about music by listening to a piano falling and hitting the ground. Admittedly, I've never used a particle accelerator.

But as of yesterday I finally have seen a piano fall off the roof of a seven story building onto a disused arcade machine. I don't think I'd fully appreciated how much this experience was missing from my life. See:
